Auburn vs Ole Miss Spread Line and Predictions CFB Week 9

The number 3-ranked Auburn Tigers (8-0, 5-0 in SEC) face another tough test in the rugged SEC when they travel to Oxford, MS to take on the Ole Miss Rebels (3-4, 1-3) this Saturday (6:00 pm ET) in a contest the could be tougher than it looks on paper. The Tigers are currently number 1 on the BCS standings and cannot afford a slip up on the road the way Oklahoma and Alabama have the last two weeks if they want to keep their National Title aspirations in tact. Auburn is coming off of two straight wins at home over ranked teams, a 24-17 win over then-number 6 LSU last week and a wild 65-43 shoot out over then-number 12 Arkansas the previous week. Ole Miss lost to Arkansas 38-24 last week and held defending National Champion Alabama to 319 total yards in falling 23-10 the week before.

The Auburn offense is based almost entirely around Heisman trophy favorite Cameron Newton, their do-everything quarterback. Newton has already run for 1,077 yards and 14 TDs (6.9 YPC) and thrown for 1,364 yards with 13 TDs and 5 INTs and a 65.2% completion percentage on the season. Newton has yet to be stopped this season, and he should have little trouble with the Rebel defense, which ranks 10th in the SEC allowing 370.6 YPG and allowed 464 yards, including 197 yards rushing in the loss to Arkansas last week. Auburn has run for more than 300 yards in 4 straight games against Sec opponents, look for them to have another big game on the ground Saturday.

The Ole Miss offense is capable of putting their share of points on the board as well, with their attack led by Oregon-transfer quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. Masoli is another dual-threat QB who leads a unit that averages 211.1 YPG rushing behind him and running back Brandon Bolden, and 199.1 YPG passing. Masoli had his best game since coming to Mississippi last week when he threw for 327 yards and 3 TDs against Arkansas. He could have his share of success through the air against Auburn as well with the Tigers ranking 101st in the country in pass defense, allowing 248.9 YPG.

Auburn has won 5 out of the last 6 head-to-head matchups with Mississippi, including last season’s 33-20 win at Auburn covering the 6 point spread. Ole Miss is 5-5 in its last 10 games against top 10 opponents. Auburn is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 conference games, and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. Ole Miss is 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games as an underdog. The over is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between the two teams at Ole Miss, and the over is 5-1 in the Rebel’s last 6 home games.

Auburn vs. Mississippi Predictions for Week 9 Game:

Over/Under Prediction (Top Play) – Take the over here, the Tigers are rolling on offense behind the dynamic Newton who pad his Heisman-worthy stats with a big game against a relatively weak opponent in the always tough SEC. The recent trends all favor the over here as well, and with both teams possessing weak pass defenses, there could be a whole lot of scoring in this game. No team has been able to hold down Newton and the Tigers to date, the smart bet says Ole Miss will not be the first. Masoli looks to be settling in after his transfer from Oregon, and the weak Auburn pass defense may just be what he needs to light it up again.

PREDICTION (Top Play) – Over 60.5

Spread Prediction – Auburn has a dynamic offense and possibly the top dual-threat quarterback in the country this season going against a defense that has not been able to stop anyone all season long. This is a mismatch that heavily favors the Tigers, even on the road. The only concern is both if Auburn’s wins on the road this season were only by 3 points, in squeakers over Mississippi St. 17-14 and Kentucky 37-34. So there is an outside shot for an upset here, but both of those teams are tougher than the Rebels this season. Ole Miss should not have much of chance to stop Newton and Company from scoring; the only question is will the Tiger’s secondary hold up against a rejuvenated Jeremiah Masoli?
