Cal vs. Utah Pick – CFB October 10th

How does Utah follow up one of the greatest wins of all time in Utes football history? We’re going to find out on Saturday, as the Utes welcome the California Golden Bears to the picturesque campus in Salt Lake City. Utah is ranked 5th in the nation and haven’t garnered this much attention since they defeated Alabama in the Sugar Bowl some years ago. Utah has always had a pretty good football team, but in 2015 they have put it all together. The Utes are an all-encompassing team, with offense and defense that can compete with anyone in the country. Oregon found out the hard way, as they lost to the Utes by a score of 62-20. It was complete domination, as the offense and defense were on full display for everyone to see in primetime. Utah had a bye week last week, so they didn’t do anything to prove their case or disprove it. They are going to get their chance this week against California. Beating Oregon 62-20 isn’t much of a fluke. Beating them by a few points, there might be a case that Utah caught a couple bounces, but not a 62-20 trouncing. Still, I am sure Utah has some doubters. A win over Cal this week after beating up on Oregon would go a long way to quieting them.

I’m fairly sure there are a lot of people that will give you the wrong answer when you ask them who is 1st in the PAC 12. While it easy to declare one of the bigger named school the leader of the conference, many of them are far off from Utah. Not only on the leaderboard, but talent wise as well. They don’t have many holes to speak of so it is difficult to exploit anything against them. Oregon definitely found that out the hard way in a 62-20 embarrassment on their own turf. Quarterback Travis Wilson leads the way under enter for Utah, who has been playing some of the best football of his career. Additionally, an NFL back in Devontae Booker is a load to stop for opposing defenses. Just a side note, but there are a lot of very good running backs in college football this season. Booker is one of them highlighting a star studded 2015 class. Want to learn more about this matchup and find my pick? Keep reading for the rest below.

California vs. Utah Pick:

Believe it or not, these are two undefeated teams going at it. Atop the PAC 12 is California and Utah. No not USC, no not UCLA, no not Oregon. The PAC 12 was supposed to be the most competitive conference in college football season this year, and I have to say it is still up for the taking. Utah is bound to have a slipup before this season is all said and done, but is it going to be against Cal here this week? Cal does have one thing going for it that’s for sure: Jared Goff. California hasn’t had a quarterback on campus since Aaron Rodgers. I think you know the guy. Goff is currently projected as being the first quarterback taken in the NFL draft next April. He has thrown for 15 touchdowns with only 4 interceptions, including a 390 yard outing last week against Washington State.
This will be Cal’s stingiest test yet, by a long shot. They are 5-0 yes, but no win has overly impressed me.

California hasn’t had to deal with a potent offense, which absolutely killed them last season. Goff was a good quarterback then too, but he got lost amidst the bad California defense. Now that Cal is 5-0 he is starting to get some recognition, but still, who have they played? They barely escaped a bad Texas team by 1 point and just got past Washington and Washington State. Their biggest win was 35-7 over another bad team, San Diego State. I’m not even going to bring up the win over Grambling State in week 1, for those wondering. I think Cal gets a big wakeup call in this one against Utah on the road. Utah should win and cover.

PICK: UTAH -7.5 (-110)
