Clemson Tigers vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Pick – NCAAF Week 7

As a result of multiple postponements on Saturday, the Week 7 weekend card is fairly small even by the 2020 pandemic edition of the college football season. The Big Ten returns before the end of the month, while the Pac-12 will follow thereafter in November, so help is on the way for college football bettors.

In one of the marquee early games on Saturday, the Clemson Tigers are in Atlanta for a meeting with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Trap game for Clemson on Saturday? Maybe if Clemson goes into this one without any focus, which is always a possibility, especially at this point in the season with an early start time.

That said, Clemson is the class of college football without any notable holes. They are packed with talent on offense and defense. Considering the state of the Alabama defense, you have to give the nod to the Tigers over the Crimson Tide. The Crimson Tide offense is scary good, but this is the worst Alabama defense that I have seen in a long time. The defense that puts fear into teams just isn’t present in 2020.

However, Clemson has a defense that still has the ability to play at a high level. They are coming off an impressive performance against a Miami offense that was running through everyone until they ran into the wall of the Clemson defense. Clemson routed Miami in a blowout by a score of 42-17 last weekend.

That took some people by surprise, but not me, as I had a confident wager on Clemson to cover that game. The only concern for Clemson on Saturday could be a letdown spot against Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets have been up and down this season, with a couple of bad losses, one decent win, and a really impressive win last week against Louisville.

After losing back-to-back outings against UCF, 49-21, and Syracuse, 37-20, the Yellow Jackets were a different team last weekend. They ousted the Cardinals by a score of 46-27 behind a nice performance by quarterback Jeff Sims. He was in a groove for the first time this season against the hapless Cardinals.

How really good is Louisville, though? We will find out on Saturday if Sims is for real or not. Despite that terrific performance, he’ll need to be even better against the Tigers’ defense. Head below for our free Clemson vs. Georgia Tech pick for October 17, 2020.

Clemson Tigers vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets NCAAF Betting Odds:

  • Clemson -27 (-110)
  • Georgia Tech +27 (-110)

  • Clemson (-3500)
  • Georgia Tech (+1175)

  • Over 64.5 (-120)
  • Under 64.5 (-110)

Clemson vs. Georgia Tech Prediction:

The combo of Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne are one of the most impossible duos to stop in college football. When you have to defend against a quarterback and running that could be starting in the NFL right now, then some gambles have to be taken. Guessing what Clemson is going to do offensively is going to happen for defensive coordinators.

Play for wrong formation, and Etienne or Lawrence can burn Georgia Tech in this game. Lawrence has passed for 10 touchdowns and no interceptions on 72.4% completions. He’s also rushed for 48 yards and 4 scores on the ground.

The New York Jets act like they have confidence in Sam Darnold being their franchise quarterback, but if they have the No. 1 pick, Lawrence might be too much to pass up on. That’s one team where Lawrence likely isn’t going to provide instant results, though.

At least in the current state of the Jets’ offense. Darnold has done all he can with limited weapons. Lawrence wouldn’t be going to a team where he’s surrounded by a lot of talent, at least initially.

He has a lot of talent at Clemson, though, and they’re chewing up college defenses with ease. Clemson has racked up 495.5 yards of offense per game. That includes 42.3 points scored per game. If they wanted it to be more than that, it could surely be higher. The Tigers have called off the dogs in the second half of games this year.

The difference in this game is likely going to be the Georgia Tech offense versus the Clemson defense. Jeff Sims was great against Louisville for the Yellow Jackets. However, he’s looked pedestrian against three other defenses in 2020. Sims has passed for 5 touchdowns and 8 interceptions on 54.6% completions.

Sims can run, but he’s not fast enough to outrun a quick and athletic Clemson defense. He’s gained 251 yards on the ground with 3 touchdowns. Clemson is going to sniff Sims out from a mile away. Maybe Louisville didn’t have the athletes up front to frustrate Sims, but the Tigers certainly do.

If he can’t get anything going with his legs, Sims is not going enough to sit in the pocket and do much damage. That’s how this game turns into a blowout in a hurry. The UCF-Georgia Tech game is probably a good preview of what’s going to happen here. I like Clemson by a score of 48-17 over the Yellow Jackets to win and cover the 27 points.
