Coastal Carolina Chanticleers vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers Pick – NCAAF Week 8

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers head to North Carolina for a mid-week primetime game against the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Coastal Carolina are looking to stay perfect following a 52-20 win over the Arkansas State Red Wolves.

That was too easy for Grayson McCall, as he passed for 365 yards and 4 touchdowns. Along with McCall airing it out, the Chanticleers had three running backs that averaged over 10 yards per carry. Leading-rusher Shermari Jones went for 113 yards and a touchdown on 11.3 yards per carry.

That was a clinic by Coastal Carolina, as they look to get to a New Year’s Six Bowl finally. They had a special season, which saw the Chanticleers go a perfect 11-0 in the regular season. Coastal Carolina had a win against a ranked No. 11 BYU team, but that didn’t matter and the Chanticleers accepted an invite to the Cure Bowl.

Their strength of schedule did them in, though Coastal Carolina had a good matchup against another powerhouse mid-major. They didn’t prove themselves, and showed why New Year’s Six committees might have been smart passing over them. Liberty edged out Coastal Carolina for a 37-34 win in overtime.

Would we have seen a different Coastal Carolina team in a more meaningful game? Maybe. Liberty was a formidable opponent, though, so no disrespect to the Flames who had an incredible season. Appalachian State is an opponent worth taking seriously. The Mountaineers are going into this one off a 41-13 loss.

That was a lifeless and unfocused performance from Appalachian State. They were the favorites in that one and played like a creampuff outfit. Appalachian State were coming off three straight wins, including a 45-16 victory over Georgia State.

The Mountaineers are going into this week with a record of 4-2. This is kind of what I expected from Appalachian State. A good team that will look great at times and different in other instances. Coastal Carolina vs. Appalachian State Prediction:

Coastal Carolina have to be feeling confident going into this one Wednesday night. Grayson McCall is playing well and he has a quality defense to back him up. McCall heads to Appalachian State with 1,478 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 1 interception on 79.8% completions.

He hasn’t been as much of a runner, but I like his game better this season. McCall has been putting on for scouts that he can be a pocket passer and doesn’t have to stray outside and run. He’s being much more patient with his decision making instead of running too early.

Coastal Carolina has piled up the points at a clip of 48.8 points and 552.5 yards per game. I will say that their competition level has been terrible. They might be the No. 14 team in the country, but their best win is against Buffalo on the road.

That was a close one as well, with the Chanticleers surviving an upset bid from the Bulls. Coastal Carolina got it done with a 28-25 win, but they were playing with fire. In their other wins, they’ve beaten The Citadel, Kansas, UMass, UL Monroe, and Arkansas State.

Some of the worst teams in the country are on their resume. Appalachian State should be a step up in class for the Chanticleers. This is a circle game for the Mountaineers. Circle in the sense that they’ve had this game noted on their schedule for a while now. Expect a much better team than last week.

Appalachian State are going to be up for this game. If Coastal Carolina comes in sloppy and not interested, this could very easily turn into a loss.

The Mountaineers have a sneaky good offense. They’ve recorded 436.3 yards and 31.5 points per game. Despite their failures last week, they’ve played tough for most of the season.

Their only other loss this season was a 25-23 loss against the Miami Hurricanes on the road. That was an example of how good the Mountaineers can play when they’re focused.

Last week they were not focused, probably looking ahead to this week, and were laughed off the field. This is going to be a spot where Appalachian State is going to show up to play. Coastal Carolina should be in for a battle on the road.
