The Motor City is hoping that second year coach Jim Schwartz and the Lions can finally “Restore the Roar” and return to respectability, a win on Sunday against the Eagles would certainly help with this restoration. The Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions will both limp into Sundays contest at Ford Field (kickoff 1PM EST) presumably without either of their starting quarterbacks. Kevin Kolb (concussion) and Matthew Stafford (throwing shoulder) were knocked out of their respective matches last Sunday and were not able to return, both teams were on the losing ends of each game. It is hard to argue a must win this early in the season but it will be crucial for each of these teams to put a mark in the win column this Sunday if they have any postseason aspirations.
The Eagles provided a valiant effort against the Packers last Sunday but could not deliver in the final moments of the game, which would have squared things up. Michael Vick played a meaningful amount of snaps and looked very Vick “esque” as he racked up 103 yards on the ground and threw for an impressive 175 yards. First round pick DE Brandon Grahm was fairly unnoticeable (0 Tackles) in his first NFL regular season game but he will be fevering for this game as he returns home to Detroit and to the State he played University ball. It will also be LB Ernie Sims return party as he was a former first round pick of the Lions but was traded away this off-season in a three way trade that landed the Lions TE Tony Scheffler. Head coach Andy Reid will have to address the penalty situation before kickoff Sunday, the Eagles committed 10 penalties for 80 yards last Sunday and had one long and crucial reception nullified by a holding call. Philadelphia will look to keep the Lions faithful quiet early in this game and stick to their balanced attack as they are a much more talented team.
Miffed by the controversial incompletion call that sealed their fate in Chicago, the Detroit Lions return home for their much-anticipated home opener. This new look defense held the Mike Martz lead Bears to 19 hard earned points last Sunday afternoon. Free agent acquisition Shaun Hill will get his first Lions start this week, he went 9/19 for 88 yards and an interception when he took over for Matthew Stafford in the second half last week. First round pick RB Jahvid Best had a lack luster performance as he rushed for 20 yards on 14 carries but provided 2 touchdowns rushing in the losing effort. The Detroit Lions will need to improve 3rd down efficiency to have any chance against the Eagles this Sunday, the Lions went 4-14 and two of the four conversions were from 5 yards or less. Defensive Coordinator Gunther Cunningham will have to game plan or provide a better scheme for this defense against the Eagles as they were absolutely dismal against the Bears. The Lions defense gave up 463 yards of total offense which is good for 31st in the league, another performance resembling last week will sure to raise questions abroad. The Lions will need to establish an early running threat in this game to help relieve some of the tension QB Shaun Hill might have and they will also have to shore up their defensive secondary concerns.

Eagles vs Lions Prediction for Week 2:
Game Total Prediction (TOP PLAY) – There is no reason to believe that since each teams pivots will most likely be wearing street clothes on Sunday that the points won’t still come. Michael Vick and Shaun Hill are extremely viable options and will be able to get their teams moving. The total has gone OVER in 4 of Detroit’s last 6 games at home and the last time these teams hooked up there were 77 points produced. Also, the controlled climate of Ford Field provides favorably for both teams ground and air attacks. I look for Jahvid Best and Michael Vick to have successful afternoons on the ground as both teams still have concerns defensively. Strongly consider taking the over (41) in this contest, each team should be able to reach 20 + points respectively. TOP PLAY PREDICTION – OVER 41
Spread Prediction – Both teams had disappointing opening weeks and will be looking to rebound with solid efforts. I like the Lions chances in this match of sticking around and keeping it tight, although they are 0-5 ATS against Philadelphia in their last five contests. I believe the revamped defensive line will be able to contain Michael Vick, should he get the nod, and I believe the Lions offense is every bit capable of keeping up with the Eagles offensive unit. I see this game being decided late in the game and most likely by a field goal. Take a look at taking the 4 points with the hometown Lions in this affair. Cheers!
