Florida State Seminoles vs. Clemson Tigers Pick – NCAAF Week 9

The Florida State Seminoles and Clemson Tigers battle in what is typically an anticipated matchup. That isn’t the case in 2021. No one cares about Florida State and Clemson football this season. In the case of Florida State, it’s been a while since people have taken notice when the Seminoles are on the field.

They won the National Championship in 2013, and lost Jimbo Fisher in 2017. He resigned to take on a job in the SEC at Texas A&M, and since then Florida State has looked lost. They attracted Willie Taggart to come from Oregon to Tallahassee, which didn’t work out at all. Taggart had no success and the program sank to new levels.

People were going into this season believing that it could be the year where Florida State is going to turn things around and field a competitive team. For a week in the season opener against Notre Dame, it certainly looked like that was going to be the case.

Florida State got to overtime versus the Fighting Irish, but just didn’t have enough and fell by a field goal, 41-38. Despite the loss, there were a lot of positives to take from that game. Mike Norvell appeared to have them in the right direction.

Then Florida State lost to Jacksonville State, 20-17, and the old Willie Taggart memories came rushing back. And then Florida State lost to Wake Forest, 35-14, and Louisville, 31-23. What’s going on over there in Tallahassee? Nearly beat Notre Dame and then lose like that. It seemed like they still weren’t over that overtime loss.

The good news for the Seminoles is that they’ve been able to stabilize lately. I don’t think they’re as good as they were versus the Fighting Irish, but don’t believe they are as bad as they were during that three-game losing skid. The Seminoles got on track with a 33-30 win against Syracuse, and then their best win of the season, a 36-25 win over the Tar Heels on October 9.

Clemson are coming off a 27-17 loss in Pittsburgh against the Panthers. It ended a two-game win streak and pushed them back to 4-3 on the year. It’s been that kind of year, and even when they’ve been winning, it hasn’t been impressive. Head below for our free FSU vs. Clemson pick on October 30, 2021.

Florida State vs. Clemson Prediction:

Clemson just haven’t been able to fully recover since opening the season with a 10-3 loss against Georgia.

That was the best game they’ve played this season, unless you considered a 49-3 blowout of South Carolina State a good game.

They didn’t even cover that game. In fact, the Tigers haven’t covered a game this season. The Tigers are 0-7 ATS without a game covered this season.

When Clemson has won, besides South Carolina State, it’s all been tight games. They had to make a stand late to hang onto a 14-8 win over Georgia Tech. That could have been a loss.

BC and Syracuse also gave Clemson all that they could handle. Clemson cut it close with a 19-13 and 17-14 win, failing to come close to covering 14.5 and 13.5 points.

The biggest disappointment for Clemson has been quarterback DJ Uiagalelei. A trendy Heisman selection, Uiagalelei could be benched if he doesn’t show up on Saturday.

He has passed for 4 touchdowns and 5 interceptions on 54.8% completions. That’s not what was expected out of him after Trevor Lawrence left for the NFL.

Florida State Seminoles vs. Clemson Tigers Betting Trends:

  • 6-13 ATS in their previous 19 games
  • 2-4 ATS in their previous six games
  • 0-5 overall in their previous five games versus Clemson
  • 6-2-1 ATS in their previous nine games after scoring at least 40 points
  • OVER is 5-1 in their previous six games after a win

  • 0-8 ATS in their previous eight games
  • 0-6 ATS in their previous six games after failing to cover the spread
  • 0-5 ATS in their previous five games as a favorite at Clemson
  • 1-4-1 ATS in their previous six games after a loss
  • UNDER is 4-0 in their previous four games as a favorite at Clemson

Uiagalelei was held in high regard going into this season, especially after what he did versus Notre Dame last season after filling in for Lawrence.

He just hasn’t had any confidence, and is in danger of sitting on the bench soon. The Clemson offense has been incredibly disappointing with 324 yards per game for 115th in the FBS.

They are one of the worst offenses through the air with just 176.1 passing yards per game. Even their usually elite defense has been good, but not great. They are 39th in the FBS with 339.1 yards allowed per game.

The Seminoles should be able to play the ball control game with their backfield. They are 14th in the country with 229.4 yards per game on the ground. Florida State has a host of backs, and a quarterback in Jordan Travis that can run.

Clemson has been a money burner this season, and I’m not too excited about running to the window to play the Tigers in this one. Florida State has been playing better football as of late and have some confidence. I’m sure they’ll be up for Clemson.
