Giants Vikings Spread Line and Betting Picks

The Giants look to be back on track after a minor speed bump which saw them lose to Dallas and Philadelphia in consecutive weeks. Following that they won a tough one against the surprisingly consistent Jaguars, and then methodically picked apart the Redskins last week, winning 31-7. What all of that means is that the Giants now sit tied for first in the NFC East at 8-4 along with the Eagles. With a wild card slot far from a sure thing thanks to the Packers and the Saints, the Giants’ best chance to make the playoffs is winning their division. That makes this week’s game an absolute must win, as the Giants’ remaining schedule is daunting. The good news for New York is that their receiving corps is finally getting healthy again, as Steve Smith expects to play, and Hakeem Nicks is hopeful as well, although he will most likely be a game time decision. Getting those guys back will be huge for Eli Manning, who has had a bit of a rough time of it lately passing to backups. Although Brandon Jacobs has become the official starter, Ahmad Bradshaw is still leading the way in the backfield, as he received 25 carries last week, netting 97 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Giants are most successful when they have a balanced attack, and now with their receivers healthy and their backfield firing on all cylinders, the Giants offense is looking like the complete package.

In Minnesota, the Brett Favre soap opera continues this week, as there are once again questions of if Favre will be healthy enough to start on Sunday and extend his consecutive games streak. All signs point towards him playing, although facing off against a fearsome Giants defense, it wouldn’t be totally shocking to see Favre start but not end the game. The Vikes, to their credit, have been getting it done with Leslie Frazier, going 2-0 since the coaching change. They now sit at 5-7, and although they won’t be in the playoffs, with games left against the Giants, Bears and Eagles, they have a great opportunity to play spoiler. They will certainly be in tough this week, especially if Percy Harvin is unable to go due to his migraine issues. Sidney Rice stepped up in a big way last week, and he will need to do so again for the Vikings to stay in it. One should also expect a heavy dose of Adrian Peterson, who needs to remain the offensive focal point for Minnesota to be successful.

Whether it is Favre or Tarvaris Jackson starting, either one is going to have some issues throwing it on this Giants defense. They are allowing the 2nd fewest passing yards per game, at 192.8. They are slightly more susceptible to the run, although they still allow under 100 yards rushing per game. Meanwhile, Eli Manning faces a fairly stiff test as well, as the Vikes are giving up a modest 210 passing yards. On the ground the Vikings are pretty tough to run on, giving up only 92 rushing yards, but the Giants cannot refuse to give up on their running game even if Bradshaw and Jacobs struggle early. Controlling the flow of the game and keeping the other team’s offense off the field will be critical for both team’s success.

Giants vs Vikings Betting Predictions/Picks for Week 14

Spread Prediction (TOP PLAY): The Vikings are proving to be a tough team to play against again, but the Giants are finally healthy, and need this win far more than Minnesota does. In addition, the question marks surrounding Favre’s health make you wonder how close to 100% he will be, and if Minnesota wouldn’t be better off starting Jackson even if Favre can give it a go. The Giants defense should feast on either one of them, and Manning should have a solid game with some of his favorite receivers back on the field. As a road favorite of a field goal or less, the Giants are 7-1 ATS, and 10-3 ATS as a road favorite of any margin. Meanwhile, the Vikings are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 as an underdog, and 0-5 ATS versus teams with winning records. Yes, Minnesota looked good the last two weeks, but keep in mind those games were against Washington and Buffalo — not exactly world beaters. The Giants should simply outclass the Vikings in this one, even on the road. Look for Steve Smith to have a big game in his return as the Giants roll to an easy win against Minnesota, as Leslie Frazier suffers his first loss as head coach.

Pick (TOP PLAY): Giants -3

Game Total Prediction: This is an interesting game because both offenses contain powerful weapons, but the defenses are not to be trifled with either. The Giants are allowing only 20.6 points per game, while the Vikings are giving up a half point more. Meanwhile, New York’s offense puts up 25.7 points per game, and the Vikings are sputtering at 18.9. Overall, the Vikings will struggle to get into an offensive rhythm against a fast and violent Giants defense, and if New York takes the lead early that eliminates some of what Adrian Peterson can do. Both teams are capable of putting up points, but the Giants are likely to build up a bit of a lead and then let Bradshaw and Jacobs eat up the clock with their rushing ability. When Minnesota scores more than 30 points the week before, the Under is 21-6, and for a broader scope, the Under is 34-16-1 following a Vikings ATS win. While the total should flirt near 43, the ferocity of the two defenses and the Giants letting their rushing duo milk the clock should be enough to keep this one Under.

Pick: Under 43
