Tonight’s game at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA pits the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles in a final preseason matchup. Both teams are fired up for their final preseason tune-up before the lights go on for real next week. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM EST.
The Jets created a tremendous buzz in the offseason by acquiring several big name veterans such as LaDainian Tomlinson, Jason Taylor and Antonio Cromartie. Along with a proven team that went to the AFC Championship a year ago, the acquisitions have media and fans alike buzzing about the Jets’ chances. Even head coach Rex Ryan is promising Super Bowl rings in Gotham City. The preseason however, has not gone very smoothly for the Jets. The Jets are 1-2 overall on the preseason, and also just 1-2 versus the spread. Last week, the Jets offense struggled mightily in a 16-11 loss to the Washington Redskins, in a game in which New York was favored by 6 points. The offense gained just 288 total yards, and has averaged an embarrassing 254 through the preseason. Second year quarterback Mark Sanchez hit on 13 of 21 passes against the ‘Skins last week but has passer rating of just 75.9 through the preseason so far.
Meanwhile, the Eagles have fared a bit better through 3 weeks in the preseason. After opening the exhibition slate with a 28-27 win over Jacksonville, the Eagles lost to the Bengals before knocking off Kansas City 20-17 last week. The Eagles covered the 1.5 point spread last week but are 1-2 against the spread for the preseason. After making headlines in the offseason by dealing long time starter and oftentimes scapegoat Donovan McNabb, the Eagles have turned the reins to Kevin Kolb, who has one career start on his resume. In the game against the Chiefs last week, Kolb was terrible in completing just 11 of 25 passes (44%) for 103 yards and an interception. He also failed to find the end zone for the third straight game, which may make Philly fans long for McNabb. Despite his struggles, the Philly offense has amassed over 345 yards per game in exhibition play, which is good for 4th in the NFL.

Jets vs Eagles Prediction for Preseason Game:
Game Total Prediction (Top Play): In three weeks of preseason action, the Jets have averaged a paltry 12 points per game, while giving up just 16.7 points per contest. Meanwhile, the Eagles have only managed to score 19.0 points per game, despite moving the ball fairly well. I am expecting that trend to continue tonight for the Jets’ offense, while their defense will be strong enough to stifle the Eagles and keep Kolb and company out of the end zone for another week. Prediction: UNDER 34 points
Spread Prediction: The Jets were offseason champions for many media outlets and were heavily picked to have a great season and maybe play for the Vince Lombardi trophy. To this point, they have been anything but title contenders. While we can’t put too much stock in the preseason, head coach Rex Ryan and his players are a competitive bunch and I expect their best effort tonight with a strong defensive presence. Prediction: New York +1.5
