Ohio State Iowa Spread Predictions and Betting Odds

One of the top matchups for this upcoming week 12 of the 2010 college football season features the number 8-ranked Ohio St. Buckeyes (9-1, 5-1 in the Big 10) traveling to Iowa City, IA to face the number 21-ranked Hawkeyes of Iowa (7-3, 4-2) this Saturday (3:30pm ET). Ohio St. comes in fresh off of a 38-14 victory over Penn St. on the road; in a game the buckeyes trailed 14-3 at the half. Iowa will come into the game hungry to erase the bitter taste in their mouths after last week’s 21-17 loss at Northwestern that knocked them out of contention for the Big 10 title. The Hawkeyes would like nothing more than to spoil Ohio State’s chances for both a Big 10 title and a potential BCS bowl game birth.

Ohio State is led on offense by quarterback Terrell Pryor who has passed for 2,136 yards and run for 512 yards and 5.5 YPC for a unit that ranks 6th in the nation with an average of 41.6 points per game scored. The Buckeyes average 455.5 YPG, good for 17th best ion the country. Ohio State is even more formidable on defense; where they have allowed an average of 237.6 YPG good for 2nd in the nation, and rank in the top 10 in passing yards, rushing yards, and points allowed per game as well. Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi, an Ohio native will have his hands full against this imposing unit stocked with NFL-caliber talent including Cameron Heyward at defensive tackle and Chimdi Chekwa at cornerback.

Stanzi commands an offensive unit that ranks in the middle of the pack nationally, averaging 405.9 YPG and 30.8 PPG. He has been the bright spot of the unit however, with a sparkling record of taking care of the football throwing for 22 TDs with only 4 INTs on the year to go with a 66.4% completion percentage. On defense the Hawkeyes have been stingy on the ground allowing only 86.8 YPG good for 5th in the nation, and allowing 15 PPG, the 7th best total in the country. If they have a soft spot on defense it is in the secondary where they have allowed 220.2 YPG through the air.

In head-to-head meetings between the two teams the favorite is 8-1 ATS in their last 9 meetings, and Ohio St. is 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings. Iowa is 15-6 ATS in their last 21 games against a team with a winning record and the Buckeyes are 22-7 ATS in their last 29 road games. The under is 7-1-2 in Ohio State’s last 10 road games, and the over is 9-3 in the Buckeyes last 12 games in November. Ohio St. vs. Iowa Betting Predictions for Week 12 Game:

Spread Prediction (Top Play) – Ohio State is a strong road favorite in this game, the Buckeyes have been the more consistent team throughout the season and should prevail in a game they need to have a shot to clinch a share of the Big 10 title next week against archrival Michigan. This game should be tight all the way through, and Iowa will not go down easily on their home field after suffering a tough loss last week. Expect Ohio St. to pull away late in a game that could even see overtime.

SPREAD PREDICTION (Top Play) – Ohio St. -3

Over/Under Prediction – Take the under as both defenses are the strongest units on each team and points will be at a premium all day long with both teams featuring veteran QBs that know how to take care of the football. Expect both teams to try to throw the ball, whether they will be successful or not is another question. The caveat to this could be if the game goes into overtime and the teams nudge over the total. Do not expect that to happen, and the total should squeak in under 48.
