The Auburn offense is led by QB Cameron Newton, a true dual-threat signal caller who was this year’s run-away Heisman Trophy winner and one of the most dynamic college football players ever. Newton ran for over 1,400 yards (5.8 YPC) and 20 TDS, and threw for over 2,500 yards and 28 TDS with a 67.1% completion percentage. Newton also led the nation with 10.52 yards per passing attempt, and he may be playing in his last collegiate game as many are speculating he will leave for the NFL. The Tiger offense averaged 42.7 PPG (4th in the nation) and 498.8 YPG of total offense (7th in the country). The concern for Auburn is their defense, which allowed an average of 28 PPG over the final eight games, and ranked 107th in the country with 250.5 YPG allowed through the air.

Oregon’ offense is led by running back LaMichael James, who finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting behind Newton and won the Doak Walker Award as the country’s top running back, ran for just over 1,700 yards (6.1 YPC) and 21 touchdowns out of the Duck’s spread-option offense. Quarterback Darron Thomas has been the triggerman for the Ducks, throwing for 2,500 yards and 28 touchdowns and running for almost 500 yards and 5 more scores. The Oregon offense has been the most explosive unit in the country this season, ranking 1st in total offense with 542.1 YPG and 1st in scoring offense with 49.3 PPG. Most of that yardage has come on the ground via James and Thomas, with the Ducks averaging 309.9 YPG rushing, 2nd in the nation. Defensively Oregon ranks 12th in the country with 18.4 PPG allowed and 23rd in YPG allowed with 327.8.

Oregon is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games when playing a team with a winning record and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 bowl games as an underdog. Auburn is 4-0 ATS when playing a team with a winning record and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The over is 4-1 in Oregon’s last 5 non-conference games and 4-1 in their last 5 bowl games. The over is 16-5 in Auburn’s last 21 games as a favorite an 6-2 in their last 8 non-conference games. This is the first time that two teams who were not ranked in the AP top 10 at the start of the season are playing for the National Title; Auburn was ranked number 22 coming into the year, while Oregon was ranked number 11. This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.

Oregon vs. Auburn Prediction for BCS National Championship Game:

Spread Prediction (Top Play) – Oregon has the most dangerous offense in the country with a running game that seemingly cannot be stopped and a defense that has been underrated all season. Auburn has a defense that faded down the stretch and has been simply horrendous against the pass this season, but the Tigers also have Cameron Newton. Newton has been hands down the best player in the country this year and has led Auburn to eight come from behind wins this season, including four by double-digit deficits. Auburn also comes from a conference (the SEC) that has produced the last four National Champions and the presence of Newton combined with their superior level of competition gives the Tigers the edge in this game.

PREDICTION (Top Play) – Auburn -1.5

Over/Under Prediction – How can you not take the over in this game? With the number one and number four scoring offenses in the country and both averaging well over 40 points per game this could be one of most high-scoring BCS National Championship Games ever. The likelihood of this being a low-scoring affair with an Auburn defense that has had so much trouble against the pass is very low indeed. Auburn seems to win a shoot out every week and you can expect this game to be no different.
