Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Ohio State Buckeyes Pick – NCAAF Week 9

The Penn State Nittany Lions and Ohio State Buckeyes have a standout matchup in the Big Ten scheduled for Saturday night. This would have been a monster showdown if Penn State was undefeated.

However, they’ve regressed hard since beating Indiana on October 2. They won that game easily and were in the top-4 nationally. The Nittany Lions haven’t been the same team since the Iowa Hawkeyes came from behind to beat them.

They were up in that one going into the 2nd quarter by a score of 14-3. Then starting quarterback Sean Clifford was injured and everything changed. The dynamic of that game changed completely and it has carried over.

Penn State responded to that loss with a record-breaking nine overtime loss against the Illinois Fighting Illini. That loss had to suck the life out of the Nittany Lions. They don’t have a lay up game or a bye week to recover from that loss. Now Penn State heads to Columbus into a hostile environment.

The Horseshoe is going to be rocking for this matchup against the Nittany Lions. If Penn State doesn’t go into this one with any sense of urgency, then they’re going to receive an uppercut early and wobble. Ohio State has all of the momentum on their side.

It’s going to be important for Penn State to hit a big play early. If they don’t, this one could get away from them quicker than they’d like. Penn State are going to Columbus with injuries piling up for their defense.

This isn’t going to be a healthy team for Penn State. We’ll see if they get up for this big matchup, though. Head below for our free Penn State vs. Ohio State pick on October 30, 2021.

Penn State vs. Ohio State Prediction:

Penn State has one of the better defenses in the country when they are healthy. However, the Nittany Lions are far from healthy going to Columbus for this one. There is going to be inexperience on the field against a high-powered Buckeyes’ offense.

Going into the Illinois game, Penn State had nine key pieces to their defense on the injury report. Allowing 20 points in regulation might be seen as a win, but against an anemic offense like Illinois, that’s not some accomplishment.

I’m not so sure that it was the best of efforts. Illinois put up a total of 437 yards with a whopping 289 yards on the ground.

When the game started, more injuries popped up for Penn State. In fact, on the first play of the game, they had an injury to defensive end Eric Latimore.

That was just a sign of things to come, as they had several more injuries in this game against Illinois. They’re beaten up and hobbled going into Columbus against the top-rated offenses in the FBS.

C.J. Stroud struggled early, but he’s regaining his confidence. Stroud has passed for 22 touchdowns and 3 interceptions on 67.6% completions. He’s going now and has an injury riddled Penn State defense in front of him on Saturday night.

  • 4-0 ATS in their previous four games after scoring more than 40 points
  • 19-1 overall in their previous 20 games at Ohio State

Ohio State is first in the country with 559.3 yards and 49.3 points per game. Stroud is up near the top with the Buckeyes passing for 352.1 yards per game.

With a healthy defense, sure, Penn State is likely going to bother the Buckeyes in this one. However, the Nittany Lions must go deep in their depth chart on Saturday night.

Penn State doesn’t have the offense to keep up with the Buckeyes. Sean Clifford has been thrown into a lion’s den in this one.

Clifford is a fine quarterback, but he’s a quarterback that needs a defense and field position. He has passed for 12 touchdowns and 5 interceptions on 64.6% completions. Help is needed, but the defense isn’t going to provide it.

Look for Penn State to go off adrenaline early, but expect Stroud to get the offense going and it’s quickly going to be lights out for the Nittany Lions.

A couple of big plays for the Buckeyes is likely going to knock Penn State out. Clifford in turn is going to try to do much, and that’s how a game gets out of hand. Look for a 43-20 Ohio State win. It’s a big number for a reason.
