SMU Mustangs at Tulsa Golden Hurricane – November 14

No. 19 SMU (7-1) at Tulsa (3-1)

SMU has a 15-11 lead in what is a competitive AAC rivalry in the southwest. The Golden Hurricane has won four of the last six while the Mustangs have won two of the last three. Two of those last four have gone to overtime, including last season when SMU notched a 43-37 victory.

The Mustangs have won their last two games after a resounding 42-13 loss to No. 6 Cincinnati where the staunch Bearcats ‘D’ never let SMU’s high-flying offense get untracked. SMU had one game postponed due to Covid-19 while Tulsa has had six games affected with two cancellations and four postponements. The Golden Hurricane won at UCF and has taken care of being a favorite in wins over South Florida and ECU.

Last Week

SMU quarterback Steve Buechele threw four touchdown passes as the Mustangs pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 47-23 win over Temple. SMU trailed 13-10 at the half against the undermanned Owls who were missing 15 players due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tulsa’s game with Navy was postponed last week due to covid issues. The Golden Hurricane slipped by East Carolina two weeks ago when TK Wilkerson scored two touchdowns, including the game-winner. Tulsa scored on five of six second-half possessions as all four of its touchdown drives were from 70-plus yards.

Posting Ponies

Sonny Dykes has built this SMU offense into one of the most feared arsenals in the country as the unit sits at eighth in the nation in churning out 526.3 yards per game. Of course, Buechele is the focal point with 322 yards passing per game, but Ulysses Bentley, IV, is having a strong season as the featured back with 96 yards rushing per outing in a ground attack that accounts for 193 yards per game. Reggie Roberson, Jr., is flashing speed and a potential NFL future at wide receiver where he is fifth on the squad in catches with 22 but averages 21.5 yards per catch.

Watch to see how fast Tulsa starts as the Golden Hurricane has scored only 12 points in the first quarter in the first four games. SMU will be tasked with stopping the Tulsa ground game that uses Deneric Prince, Corey Taylor, II, and Wilkerson to rush for an average of 151 yards per game. Quarterback Zach Smith also does an efficient job in running this team out of its Pistol formation as he has completed 59.5 percent of his passes. Zaven Collins is having an all-America year at linebacker with 28 tackles, eight of those for loss with three sacks, and two interceptions. He had a 38-yard pick-6 vs. South Florida.
