Memphis vs. Tulsa Pick – CFB October 23rd

Welcome to the world University of Memphis. The world of college football that is. After countless years of only fielding a solid basketball team, the football team at Memphis has finally arrived to the party. This Memphis football team is a school that would routinely be a walking mat for others. They were routinely massive underdogs to just about everyone they’ve played. Now with a 6-0 record and 17th ranking in the country, the Memphis Tigers are on the map in college football. Memphis is powered by a high powered offense that is sitting among the best in all of college football. Who would have thought? Ole Miss found out the hard way how good the Memphis offense is. Defeating the Rebels for a historic school win, 37-24. That was a win that let everybody else know that the Memphis Tigers are here. Are they here to stay is the question. With the kind offense they have, they can surely find a decent bowl game. I don’t know if they can make it an undefeated season, but they can certainly have one of their best seasons of all time and a pretty good bowl game at season end.

I don’t think there is some big secret to this game. If Memphis doesn’t have a hangover from last week, they should kill Tulsa. However, avoiding that might be difficult after the schools biggest win in many years. They had to be celebrating that win for a night or two. But a loss against Tulsa could absolutely drop last weeks win over Ole Miss out of people’s memories. The argument would be that Ole Miss beat Ole Miss and Memphis wasn’t so much a good team, but the Rebels beat themselves that day. Tulsa isn’t the best of teams, which might have an additional negative impact on Memphis. They just beat Ole Miss, okay, so Tulsa should be a cakewalk right? That is the kind of thinking that results in lost games and gamblers losing their bankroll. Let’s handicap this one and try and predict where this one is heading.

Memphis vs. Tulsa Pick:

Who owns the longest win streak in the country? Now that I have posed that question I have kind of given it away, but that one doesn’t belong to Alabama, it belongs to the Memphis Tigers. Due in part to their prolific offense led by Paxton Lynch, the Tigers have won thirteen straight games, dating back to last season. But I don’t believe anyone envisioned it carrying over to this season and a win over Ole Miss. Paxton has thrown for 13 touchdowns and only 1 interception, really impressive stuff out of the senior quarterback. Memphis has averaged a whopping 46 points scored per game. Their win differential this season has worked out to be 19.7.

Looks like a sure fire win for Memphis given those numbers. But Tulsa can score points too at 33.3 points per game. Tulsa also isn’t coming off the biggest win their program has had in over a decade. They are in fact coming off a 30-17 loss against Eastern Carolina. Tulsa is passing for 345.5 yards per game. They’re going to air it out all game long. Quarterback Dane Evans has throw for 11 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, along with 2127 yards. The pass D is the weakness for this Memphis team. One of their only weaknesses actually, as they are giving up 329 yards per game through the air. I think Tulsa is going to be able to move the ball that way and play spoiler in this game against Memphis. They may not win, but enough to make Memphis sweat.

PICK: TULSA +10.5 (-110)
