Toledo vs. Eastern Michigan Pick – NCAAF Week 6

For all of the Toledo Rockets and Eastern Michigan fans out there, this one is for you. Okay, I have attended an Eastern Michigan game in the past, and there were about five people at the game, including myself, so all four of you have to be excited about the Eagles getting some attention on The Sports Geek. All jokes aside, Eastern Michigan is playing some of the best football since the Charlie Batch era. You may think I’m kidding about that as well, but oh no, the Eagles have been a dumpster fire since the late 90’s. Eastern Michigan went 6-6 a couple of years ago, but their two wins came against FCS schools, which didn’t help their cause at reaching a bowl game.

With a 4-1 start to the season, Eastern Michigan is already almost there to finding a bowl game. Getting closer today is going to be difficult, as they have the best team in the MAC coming to visit their grey field. Yeah, Eastern Michigan plays on a grey field. In the MAC there is Toledo, Western Michigan, and then everybody else. Toledo and Western Michigan are exponentially better than the rest of the conference. Eastern Michigan has played solid football, but they have several steps they need to take to begin competing for a conference title. Just find a bowl game, any kind of bowl game and it would be a monumental step forward for this program.

School administration was debating axing the football program altogether, or bumping them down to the FCS level. Perhaps the news was a signal to the team to save the program. If that’s what they’re going for, these group of Eagles have been doing a fine job. The warm and fuzzy feeling is there at Eastern Michigan, but they have to get down to business this afternoon. They’ll have their stiffest test of the year on their campus today. A solid showing against the Toledo Rockets would yield yet another sign of progress. The Rockets are a good football team, though, and the Eagles will need to play their best to pull off an upset or in the least keep it close.

Toledo vs. Eastern Michigan Pick:

Toledo were 3-0 before they lost a wild one last week against BYU. The Rockets fought hard, a game they should get some credit for, but fell 55-53. Putting up 53 points on BYU is no easy chore. The size and strength of BYU was too much for the Toledo offense to control, though. Eastern Michigan hopes to take a page out of the BYU playbook this week. Although, Eastern Michigan and BYU have vastly different offenses. The Cougars are old school, run the football up the gut and wear the other side out. And it’s exactly what happened last week. The Eagles like to play the option.

Quarterback duties were shared a week ago, with EMU going to backup Brogan Roback, who ended up throwing for 3 touchdowns. Roback is a pocket passer, while Todd Porter is a runner. Porter has thrown 7 touchdowns with 9 interceptions this season, along with 173 yards rushing. The Eagles will provide a different look for Toledo this season.

Eastern Michigan is going to have to score some points in this ball game, because Toledo can run the score up in an instance. The Rockets have averaged 45.25 points per game this season. Their lowest point total was in Week 1 against Arkansas State, where they scored 31 points. Since that game, Toledo has scored 50 points per game and have scored more with each ensuing game. Toledo very well could score in the 50s in this game. Toledo has scored more than 50 the last five years against Eastern. The Eagles have been looking so much better, but they will probably get knocked down a peg this week. Rockets in a route today on the grey field of Eastern Michigan.

PICK: TOLEDO -18 (-115)
