UConn vs. BYU Pick – CFB October 2nd

BYU welcomes UConn for a Friday night matchup in week 5 of the college football schedule. Week 5 already? Yeah I know, it is crazy how fast things are going. It’s already October and the summer is all but a memory now. Sports wise, October is my favorite time of the year. We have the baseball postseason, football is in full-swing, and hockey is starting up, along with NBA basketball. Friday nights are always the appetizer for football before the main course on Saturday. BYU is coming off a brutal beating at the hands of the Michigan Wolverines. Jim Harbaugh has Michigan playing at an optimal level, they look like they are heading in the right direction no doubt about it. The Wolverines are now ranked in the top 25 at 22. BYU was looking to creep into the top 10 two weeks ago, but they’ve in fact gone in the opposite direction. They lost a heart breaker to UCLA, which would have elevated them to a newfound level. But they lost that one by a point, a game in which the Cougars were in control of. And then weren’t even competitive against U of M in a 31-0 loss.

Connecticut was one of the worst teams in college football last season. They won only two games all year long, thanks to a young team that was playing without much experience. We are only five weeks in and the Huskies have already matched their win total from 2014. Both teams are entering tonight at 2-2. While they are both at .500, BYU has had the far rougher road to get there. Their last two weeks have been brutal, having to play the Bruins and Wolverines. Conversely, Connecticut had meetings against Navy and Mizzou. However, Navy isn’t that bad of a football team, they are 3-0 for the first time in nearly a decade. So with that considered, it wasn’t a bad game for the Huskies. With respects to covering and winning games, UConn has the defense to be able to do that. They held Mizzou to just 9 points, in a hard fought 9-6 loss. So in their two losses, the Huskies have been competitive. They enter as big underdogs by 18.5 points to the Cougars, depending where you get the line at.

Connecticut vs. BYU Pick:

BYU has become a much more balanced team in the last couple of years. They are a team looked to whip the ball around the yard without much care on defense. Now that they have gained a defense, they haven’t had to just rely on the offense scoring 40 or even 50 point a game to win. By all means this should be a low-scoring game against two defensive minded teams. It could be ugly at times, but all that matters is we cash a ticket. Starting quarterback for BYU, Tanner Mangum, has looked spectacular at times, and then others he looks like he has no business as a starter.

Mangum is a freshman, so he is taking some bumps as a rookie. There are some freshmans that step in and look like they’ve been with the program for years, but Magnum looks like a quarterback that is going to take his lumps. I do, however, he will have a good career at BYU. Mangum has thrown 4 touchdowns on the year with 3 interceptions. Look for the Cougars to give Adam Hine a workout, who already has more yards in 2015 than he did in his first two with the team.

The Huskie secondary is strong, definitely the most beneficial weapon UConn has on their team. In their most difficult test against Mizzou, the Huskies held veteran Maty Mauk to just 146 yards passing with no touchdowns and a pick. Two of the four teams UConn have played has been military schools, Navy and Army. In their other game against a traditional offense, Villanova, the Huskies were able to hold them to only 189 yards passing. A passer has yet to crack the 200 yard mark against UConn. Getting 18.5 points with a defense like that is a prime situation in my opinion. This is going to be a low-scoring game, I think they nailed the total at 44. I suspect the odds makers afforded the Huskies to make points in this game. Note that BYU would be 1-3 if it wasn’t for a Hail-Mary against Nebraska. I take them to cover Friday night.

PICK: UCONN +18.5 (-110)
