Utah vs Boise State MAACO Bowl Spread and Predictions

**IMPORTANT** – This is a guest post for the Utah/Boise State MAACO Bowl.  Our college football writer (Sam St) had computer probems and couldn’t get the article in today.

At the beginning of the year you would have thought this matchup was a BCS matchup. To me, this is a good thing it isn’t. I think this will be a quality game, but I just don’t think these teams deserve a BCS game until they play a schedule worthy or comparable to other BCS schools. Utah started the season with an overtime win over Pitt and then cruised right through the next 6 games. They had a tough 5 point win @ Air Force. Then after they reached number 5 in the polls, their offense hit a rut against that stiff TCU D and then decided not to show up against Notre Dame the next week. The QB Wynn and the receivers just didn’t seen to be on the same page. Wynn came back to have a career day @ San Diego State throwing for 362 on 21 completions. They cleaned up the end of the schedule with a 1 point win over a hot BYU team. Boise had the Virginia Tech game to start the season. That was a crazy and close game. The rest of the season for Boise was pretty much a bore. The whooped everyone until they went on the road to Nevada and one of the best rushing teams in the country. Just think if Boise had to play teams closer to their level of talent all season, they may have had more than 1 loss. Then they finished the season blowing out Utah State.

Boise is ranked 4th in overall defense giving up only 259 yards/game and only 13.6 points/game. They let up 103 yards/game on the ground. In the air they give up only 155 yards/game. This Boise D has been pretty stiff all year. Utah struggled against good defenses. Utah offense ranks 37th in the country in passing gaining 248 in the air every game. They ranked 56th in their running game at 156 yards/game. They averaged 35 points/game which is good for 18th in the country. Utah ranks 21st on defense letting up 321 yards/game. They rank 59th in passing D giving up 215 yards/game. Their rush D ranks 9th in the country and gives up only 104 yards on the ground per game. They allow 19.6 points per game. This Utah pass D is not going to be safe against a Boise St. offense that is 6th in the nation in passing. They gain 319 yards in the air per game. Their running game gets 200 yards/game, good enough for 24th in the nation. They score 46.7 points/game which is good for 2nd in the country. This offense has too much power for this Utah team. This Utah team has struggled against quality defenses. Boise has a quality D. This should be a blowout if Boise shows up, but this is a though line at 17. I think Boise gets it. When Utah loses, they lose hard.
