UTEP vs. Texas Tech Pick – CFB September 12th

Texas Tech got off to an unexpected close call, in the first-half anyway, against Sam Houston State. That was an opponent that Texas Tech had the opportunity to bury in week 1 but let them hang around, giving them a brief scare. The score was 35-31 heading into half-time, as an offensive explosion was the name of the game in that one. When you score 59 points, it’s usually not all that close of a game. The Red Raiders were probably looking for a 59-10 win, but it turned into 59-45. There are obvious no issues on one side of the ball with the Texas Tech offense. They have a quarterback that looks to be in for a monster year. That is the case with some of these quarterbacks in the Big-12. The offenses lend themselves to big numbers for quarterbacks. Does that translate into a quality NFL quarterback? Oh no. Finding a good Big-12 quarterback in the NFL is hard. They don’t play from under center, always playing out of the shotgun in a quick, fast moving offense that can move up the field with ease.

The same with Texas Tech, who is in good company with Patrick Mahomes II at the controls. After bouncing around QBs last season, the Red Raiders settled with Mahomes II, which is paying off for them. He took over the job last season, finishing with 16 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions in his freshman campaign. With some years to blossom, I expect him to be able to pile on the points for Texas Tech. The offense has split time between two or three quarterbacks the last couple of seasons, trying to find just the right guy. Mahomes is certainly that guy for this weekend and for the future.

A tough schedule for UTEP to start the year out. I do give them credit for scheduling them, that I will give UTEP. They opened against Arkansas last week, which they set themselves as punching bags on the road and played that role pretty well. UTEP ultimately got pasted for a score of 48-13. With the Texas Tech deficiencies on defense, can the Miners catch the Red Raiders napping and pull out a big upset? I provide my thoughts below and give my exclusive pick.

UTEP vs. Texas Tech Pick

I find it hard to believe UTEP is going to be able to slow down Patrick Mahomes II and Texas Tech this weekend. Texas Tech scored 59 on Sam Houston State last week, I think they can reach the 50s rather easily again this week against the Miners. It’s going to be really tough for their defense to regroup after getting beat up by Arkansas last week. That isn’t a fun offensive line to face for a full game. Another thing, Arkansas is a totally different offense than Texas Tech. They are getting a completely different look against the Red Raiders on Saturday. UTEP will see a lot of stuff they didn’t see last week. Mahomes was proficient in the win last week, dicing Sam Houston State up for a total of 425 yards and 4 touchdowns with 1 interception.

Now my problem here with a 20 point spread on Texas Tech isn’t the offense, because they’re going to be able to get their points. However, I have a big problem laying that many points on their defense. A backdoor last second touchdown from UTEP to screw Texas Tech backers is just what this game is looking like. An additional wrench is that sack leader from a year ago, Pete Robertson, will be absent with an injury. So instead, why not just take a look at the total? Texas Tech will score and UTEP should fine some points against the Red Raiders. I would take a look at the OVER 66 for today, a total I think should be somewhere around 72 or 73.
