Vanderbilt goes from one physical team to the other. After getting blown off the field against Alabama, Vandy gets another SEC foe in Week 5. Vanderbilt didn’t put up much of a fight in Nashville, losing by a score of 59-0. Some thought the Commodores’ defense may have provided some pushback but there was no resistance at all. Alabama outgained Vanderbilt by 599 yards! Vanderbilt quarterback Deuce Wallace passed for 20 yards on 3/7 passing, and Kyle Shurmur threw an interception and 18 yards. Vanderbilt will face another stingy defense this week against Florida at The Swamp.
Florida is coming off a close win against Kentucky. The week prior against Tennessee, a Hail Mary at the end of regulation gave the Gators an improbable win. With time ticking down, it appeared that Florida was just going to try and get into field goal range for a long attempt, but Feleipe Franks had a different idea. Franks threw a 63-yard bomb to Tyrie Cleveland. Despite that play, Florida has had mounds of issues moving the ball this season.
The Gators are going in a different direction at quarterback this week. Luke Del Rio, the son of Jack Del Rio, will get the start against Vanderbilt. Del Rio has experience, he just wasn’t good enough to beat out Franks in camp. He threw for 8 touchdowns and 8 interceptions a year ago, and got in last week against Kentucky. He connected on 9-of-14 passing for a touchdown and interception.
He is no playmaker, but a good manager to allow the defense to win games. Despite the bad start for Shurmur against Bama, he’s been good with 8 touchdowns and only 1 interception. His level of competition has been ratcheted up and it will continue this week against Florida on the road. We’ll see how it goes. Head below for our free Vanderbilt vs. Florida pick.

Vanderbilt vs. Florida Pick:
Vanderbilt couldn’t do anything on offense, and couldn’t do anything defensively. Their offense was expected to struggle, but the Vandy defense didn’t expect to get taken to the toolshed like that. The Commodores didn’t have issues before meeting Alabama. In other action in 2017, they defeated Middle Tennessee, Alabama A&M, and Kansas State. That was a very good win against KSU, a 14-7 clinic on defense. I don’t really think they were too focused on Alabama after the win, conceding before it even started.
This is a more winnable game for Vanderbilt, but they are still 10-point underdogs here at The Swamp. They got their face punched in against Alabama, but they can’t allow their season to unravel now. They’re still in a good position with a record of 3-1, and they have one of the better defenses in college football. They get another physical defense this week, but they got an offense who is 113th in the country with 322 yards per game.
After last week, the Commodores’ defensive numbers are a bit skewed. They are 31st in the country, allowing 318 yards and 18 points per game. There are not too many teams who can give up 59 points and come out with just an 18-point average on defense. Against an inferior offense like Florida, they should have no problems getting back on track. Even though their defense is strong, their offense is averaging only 279 yards per game, 124th in the FBS. I don’t expect the offenses to have a fun time in this matchup. It should be a low-scoring slug fest. A 24-14 or 24-17 final looks pretty accurate.
