The PFL is set to hold its fourth event of 2021 this Thursday evening in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Unfortunately, the main is now being switched around on short notice. Reports have confirmed that Anthony Pettis is out of his fight at PFL 4 against Alexander Martinez due to illness.

It’s tough news for Pettis, who lost his first bout in the PFL. Now is a great time to talk about what the PFL has planned as a backup. We’ll also break down some of the other matchups on this card.

Let’s get into it!

The PFL’s Lightweight Tournament is Loaded With Talent Right Now

The Professional Fighters League has a different structure than many other major MMA promotions. Here, all fighters compete in a tournament within their own weight class. Tournament winners are rewarded with an incredible $1 million prize.

Every single tournament taking place in the PFL features world-class talent. Some now believe that the lightweight division’s tournament is the best in the promotion. There are a huge number of truly elite fighters working their way to a million-dollar prize in this weight class.

Some believe that Clay Collard is now one of the betting favorites to win this tournament. The former professional boxer looked incredible in his PFL debut over Anthony Pettis in April, despite entering the fight as a massive underdog according to all online sports betting sites. He is an elite striker and has the power to beat any of his opponents.

Natan Schulte is another elite lightweight in the PFL. He is 20-4-1 in the promotion but lost in his first bout of the 2021 tournament. He seems determined to bounce back from that loss and is still in the running for a shot at one million dollars.

Anthony Pettis is still the most-talked-about fighter in the PFL’s lightweight division. He fell short in his first fight against Clay Collard, yet nearly finished the fight with a head kick in the third round. Many expected him to earn his first PFL in this Thursday’s matchup against Alexander Martinez.

Unfortunately, Pettis will not be stepping into the cage this week. Here’s what you need to know about this situation.

Sources Confirm Anthony Pettis is Out of PFL 4 Due to Illness

Back in 2013, Anthony Pettis established himself as one of the best MMA fighters in the world by capturing the UFC’s lightweight title over Ben Henderson. His striking style was one of the most exciting in the sport. Pettis also had elite submissions in his arsenal to thwart off wrestlers.

Over the next seven years, “Showtime” would alternate wins and losses in the UFC. He remained must-see TV during his run in the promotion. After a win over Alex Morono in 2020, news broke that Pettis was making the move over to the PFL.

Anthony’s first fight ended up being a back-and-forth war with Clay Collar. He lost, yet seemed determined to work his way back to a tournament win. His second PFL bout was scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 10, against Alexander Martinez.

News broke today that Anthony Pettis is out of this fight due to injury. The PFL has booked the aforementioned Natan Schulte to take his place against Martinez. It seems likely that Anthony will simply be rebooked to fight again later this year.

This will obviously hurt Pettis’ chances of advancing through the lightweight tournament. The show must go on and there are plenty of fighters at 155 pounds willing to fight right now. We’ll be sure to offer more information on Anthony’s return over the next few weeks.

The big fights take place tomorrow night. Fortunately, there is still time for MMA fans around the world to bet on all the action. Let’s check out the odds.
