Even if history and the betting odds weren’t on their side, the Houston Astros managed to win Game 5 and extend the 2021 World Series to a sixth game to be played at their ballpark.
Entering Game 5, the Astros faced an Atlanta Braves team that was 7-0 at home during the current postseason. Then Adam Duvall hit a grand slam in the first inning to give the Braves an early 4-0 lead and put the Astros on the ropes. And then it happened.

Prior to Sunday’s Game 5, teams up by four or more runs in a potential series clincher had lost just thrice in 48 instances. When Duvall hit the grand slam, the Astros’ live odds went as long as +450 at the Caesars Sportsbook and it seemed like a grim scenario for everyone, well except the Astros.
But down 3-1 in the World Series and 4-0 in the title-clinching Game 5, the Houston offense that struggled to hit just .206 through the first four games of the series, battled back and scored nine runs to win the game send the series back to Houston for at least a Game 6.
The leftovers of the 2017 team destroyed the Braves in Game 5. Altuve, Correa, Bregman, Gurriel, and Gonzalez went a combined 9-20 with six RBIs and six runs. And the Astros became only the third team in MLB history to win a World Series game by four runs after trailing by four runs and the first team to do so while facing elimination.

Despite blowing a 4-0 lead in Game 5 and a chance to win their first World Series since 1995 at their ballpark, the Braves are still up 3-2 in the series and are still -180 betting favorites at SportsBetting.ag to win Game 6. Atlanta is still also the sizeable -225 odds on favorite to win the 2021 World Series at online sportsbook BetMGM.
At the online sportsbook BetOnline.ag, the Braves are the +110 betting favorites to win the World Series in six games. Interestingly, the next shortest odds in the correct series result betting market is for the Astros to win at +200 with Atlanta winning in seven games having the longest odds at +275.
History is on the side of the Braves once again as no team has clinched the World Series in its own ballpark since the 2013 Boston Red Sox. To accomplish the feat, the Astros need to win twice at their Minute Maid Park but the last team to overcome a 3-1 World Series deficit was the Cubs against Cleveland in 2016
