Badou Jack Flattens Hany Atiyo

Former two-division world champion Jack is coming off a 45-second knockout win against Hany Atiyo last May 21st in the undercard of Floyd Mayweather’s exhibition bout against Don Moore. The 38-year-old from Stockholm, Sweden has won four consecutive bouts since suffering back-to-back losses to Marcus Browne and Chad Dawson in world title fights. This will mark Jack’s third straight bout in the Middle East.

Jack’s last four bouts may have been against tomato cans but before that, he fought the best fighters in his weight class. Jack the Ripper won the WBC super middleweight title by defeating Andre Dirrell in 2015. He then defeated Nathan Cleverly in 2017 to become WBA light heavyweight champion. Overall, Jack has a record of 26-3 with 19 knockouts.

This marks the fifth consecutive fight where Jack has opened as a massive betting favorite, though this is the first time he’s opened at odds longer than -1000 during that span. Jack’s previous longest odds in his last four bouts were at -1667 against Dervin Colina in June of last year.

Popeye the Sailor Man

Jack’s opponent is Richard Rivera who is better known as Popeye the Sailor Man in the regional boxing circuits. Fighting out of East Hartford, Connecticut, the 31-year-old is one of the more popular fighters in the New England area and is credited for almost single-handedly resurrecting the dormant Hartford boxing scene.

Promoted by Hall of Famer Joe DeGuardia and fighting out of the Star Boxing Stable, Popeye Rivera has an undefeated record of 21-0 with 16 wins coming via knockouts. In his most recent ring appearance, Rivera knocked out Fidel Monterrosa inside three rounds at the AIC Gymnasium in Springfield just last April 29th.

Other than winning the 2016 Rocky Marciano Tournament, Rivera had a relatively non-descript amateur boxing career. However, he has gained valuable experience serving as the sparring partner of former world champions Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin, Chad Dawson, and Joe Smith Jr. In a professional bout, however, he has not fought anyone near Badou Jack’s level. In fact, he has no record in ProBoxingOdds.com’s database except as a current +225 betting underdog against Jack after opening at +400 odds.
