Just like that, Max Verstappen has taken the lead in the Drivers standings.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was off to a fast start, taking the lead in the standings with two wins in the first three races of the season. But after his win at last Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix, reigning Formula One world champion Max Verstappen is back at the helm.

With back-to-back wins in the previous two races, Verstappen headed to Spain as the +100 odds on favorite to win the 62nd edition of the Catalunya race. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc entered the race as the championship leader. At +125 odds, Leclerc won the qualifying and started from the pole. But it was Verstappen who won the battle as Leclerc retired from the race on lap 27 with a power issue.
Verstappen recovered from a mistake in lap nine, which saw him run through the gravel at turn 4 and lose position to teammate Sergio Perez. He secured the win on Lap 49 when Red Bull ordered Perez to let Verstappen pass him. Perez described the controversial decision over the radio as “very unfair” but he obeyed team orders and moved over when his teammate appeared in his mirrors.
The win enabled Verstappen to overtake Leclerc in the Drivers’ standings. As it stands right now, the defending world champion is now the new leader with 110 points. Leclerc, who had led since winning the opening race in Bahrain, has dropped to second with 104 points. Perez meanwhile, finished second for a 1-2 finish by Red Bull while Mercedes’ George Hamilton completed the podium.
Hat Trick for Verstappen

Verstappen began the season with a 19th place finish in Bahrain, then won the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. But the Belgian-Dutch driver fell behind by 46 championship points after retiring in Melbourne. However, three consecutive victories in Imola, Miami, and now Catalunya have vaulted him to the top spot on the championship leaderboard.
Entering Sunday’s race, Verstappen was the -120 odds on favorite to win a second straight Formula One world title. Those odds have shortened further after pulling off the hat trick. According to the latest championship odds at B3t365 USA, Verstappen is now the -150 betting favorite to win the 2022 Formula One world championship with Leclerc falling to +150 from +110 before the Spanish Grand Prix. The Red Bull ace is now at an even shorter -155 odds at BetMGM and PointsBet USA.
The 2022 Formula One world championships will continue next weekend at the Circuit de Monaco for the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix where he is expected to receive a fierce challenge from his chief rival Leclerc who will be racing in front of his countrymen. Leclerc has opened as the -105 betting favorite to win his home race while Verstappen is currently listed at +120 odds with Perez a distant third favorite at +1800.
