Unstoppable Brandon Ingram Leads Pelicans to Upset of Top-Seeded Suns

New Orleans Pelicans Vs Suns NBA Background

  • The New Orleans Pelicans defeated the Phoenix Suns 115-114 in Game 2 of their best-of-seven first round series.
  • Brandon Ingram went over his scoring, rebounding, and passing prop bets with 38 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists.
  • The Pelicans have gone from a +1500 series underdog to a +240 after Tuesday’s win.

The New Orleans Pelicans were supposed to be just a footnote in the Phoenix Suns’ run to the 2022 NBA title.

New Orleans opened the season with a 3-16 record. and finished the campaign with only 36 wins. But because of the Play-in Tournament, they were able to get to the playoffs as the Western Conference’s 8th seed. But it wasn’t easy. They needed to beat the San Antonio Spurs and the L.A. Clippers in back-to-back games to do so.

In Game 1, the Suns dominated the Pelicans and many were already looking for the broom in anticipation of a sweep. But then Brandon Ingram entered the picture and flipped the script.

Brandon Ingram was Unstoppable

Ingram was unstoppable in Game 2. The former 2nd overall pick of the 2016 NBA Draft barely missed a triple-double with 37 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists while shooting 62% from the floor and 3-4 from behind the three-point arc. He scored 26 of his total points in the second half where the Pelicans outscored the Suns by 16 points to turn a five-point halftime deficit into an 11-point win as +9.5 point underdogs.

BI also gifted his OVER bettors by going past his game prop bets of 24.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 0.5 three-pointers made, making up for his subpar Game 1 performance where he went under those same prop bets except three-pointers made. Since the start of the play-in tournament, Ingram has gone OVER his scoring prop three times in four games.

Ingram also became only the third player in Pelicans history, after David West and Anthony Davis, to put up a 35 points and 10 rebounds game in the playoffs. In his first two games played, Ingram has amassed totals of 55 points, 16 rebounds, and 13 assists, numbers bettered only by the legendary Oscar Robertson. But more importantly, the Pelicans won the game and tied the series 1-1 heading to The Big Easy.

Booker Likely to Miss Games 3 and 4

New Orleans entered the postseason as heavy betting underdogs against the top-seeded Phoenix Suns who were the best regular season team in the NBA. After the Suns blew them out in Game 1, the Pelicans saw their series odds fall to +1500 at the BetOnline App. However, those same odds at the same sportsbook are now suddenly at +240 while the Suns’ price had meteorically dropped from -4000 to -285 with Games 3 and 4 to be played at the Smoothie King Center. But that’s not it.

Suns superstar guard Devin Booker is unlikely to play in the next two games in New Orleans. Booker waxed hot and even went over his scoring prop of 27.5 in the first half alone with 31 points but he left the game in the third quarter with hamstring tightness. He’s already had an MRI and although the injury doesn’t appear to be serious, it’s currently being re-evaluated and the Suns want to be cautious with Booker’s health.

Without D-Book for Game 3, Friday’s game has opened as a pick’em game at the top NBA sportsbooks. Although the Suns are slight -124 betting favorites at the BetOnline App’s Moneyline, the spread odds say Phoenix is just a -1 point favorite. That’s a stark contrast from Games 1 and 2 where the Suns opened as -10 point favorites. Although it remains to be seen how long or short Booker will be out, the fact is that the Suns need him if they want another title run. Phoenix was 56-12 with Booker this season and just 8-6 without him.
