Brandon Royval Ekes Out Split Decision Over Rogerio Bontorin
— MMAFighting.com (@MMAFighting) January 16, 2022
Royval eked out a split decision against Rogerio Bontorin in his most recent appearance at UFC Vegas 46 last January 15th. The victory snapped a two-fight losing streak for Royval who was knocked out by Brandon Moreno at UFC 255 and submitted by Alexandre Pantoja at UFC Vegas 34. Prior to those twin defeats, the 29-year-old from Denver, Colorado won his first two UFC assignments against Tim Elliott and Kai Kara-France, with both wins coming via submission.
The no. 6 ranked flyweight in the UFC is also a former LFA flyweight champion, winning the belt at LFA 79 with a unanimous decision win over Nate Williams. Royval also fought under Kick Down MMA, WSOF, Combate Americas, and SCL. He has a record of 13-6 with three knockouts and six submission victories.
This marks only the second time in his UFC career that Royval has seen the minus money sign placed next to his name. The only other time inside the Octagon where he was listed as a betting favorite was in his last bout against Bontorin when he opened at -110 and closed at -185 odds.
Rogerio Bontorin Beats Matt Schnell in Catchweight Bout
— Damon Martin (@DamonMartin) May 16, 2021
Interestingly, Matt Schnell’s last UFC opponent was also Rogerio Bontorin. But while Royval beat Bontorin, the latter took a unanimous decision against Schnell at UFC 262 in May 2021. The loss, however, was later overturned into a no-contest after Bontorin tested positive for a banned diuretic, leaving Schnell with only one official defeat in his last six bouts.
The 32-year-old from Amory, Mississippi is also a former flyweight champion but at the Legacy FC promotion. Schnell won the interim Legacy FC flyweight belt at Legacy FC 52 in 2016 before joining the UFC’s The Ultimate Fighter: Tournament of Champions where he lost to Rob Font in the opening round. Overall, Schnell has a record of 15-5 with two knockouts and 8 submission victories.
Schnell opened as the -125 betting favorite against Bontorin and closed at -165 but lost that bout. Prior to that, he was the betting underdog in four consecutive bouts against Louis Smolka, Jordan Espinosa, Alexandre Pantoja, and Tyson Nam. He won three of those bouts with his only loss during that span coming at the hands of Pantoja.
