- The Nets are still the betting favorites to win the 2022 NBA title even without Kyrie Irving.
- Brooklyn GM Sean Marks announced on Tuesday that the team is sending away Irving until he gets fully vaccinated.
- The Nets’ odds dropped from +240 to +260 but they are still favored to win it all.
The Brooklyn Nets remain as the odds on favorite to win the 2022 NBA championship despite Tuesday’s announcement from the team that they will not allow Irving to be a “part-time” player for them this season.
At online sportsbook BetOnline, the Nets’ championship odds dropped by $20 from +240 to +260 while their odds to win the Eastern Conference moved from +100 to +110. Despite those, the Nets are still favored to win both the East and the Larry O’Brien trophy this season. Brooklyn’s odds to win their division and to make the playoffs remained the same. Their regular season win total, however, which stood at 56.5 at the said sportsbook, has been taken off the board for now.
Nets Ban Irving From Team Until He’s Vaccinated

Irving’s status for this season was in doubt after he continues his stance against getting the COVID-19 vaccine. With New York City prohibiting unvaccinated individuals to enter public arenas, Irving stood to miss Brooklyn’s 41 regular season games and face a hefty fine. Despite that, he sounded like he was ready to face the consequences while the Nets would allow him to play in cities where no such restrictions are in place.
But on Tuesday, Nets GM Sean Marks announced that the team has decided to “send away” Irving until he is fully eligible to participate. In other words, Marks is saying that unless Kyrie gets fully vaccinated, he will not be a part of the team and that there will be no “part-time” availability for the Nets guard.
But even if Irving isn’t around, the Nets still have a loaded line-up led by Kevin Durant, James Harden, Blake Griffin, and the returning LaMarcus Aldridge. Brooklyn was also able to make a key acquisition in Aussie guard Patty Mills, who should be able to help Steve Nash mitigate the absence of Irving in their backcourt. Brooklyn also added veteran Paul Millsap to even bolster their rotation.

Although their odds are a little longer now, the Nets are still the consensus betting favorites to win the 2022 NBA championship. At BetOnline, the Nets’ odds are still $90 shorter than the second team on the list, the Los Angeles Lakers who are currently listed at +350. The defending champions Milwaukee Bucks are the only other team at that sportsbook to have odds shorter than +1000 at +750.
Brooklyn is also the +240 odds on favorite at BetMGM with the Lakers listed at +400. The Bucks and Golden State Warriors are next there at +900. FoxBet and Caesars Sportsbook have the same odds for the Nets, Lakers, and Bucks at +230, +400, and +800, respectively. Meanwhile, PointsBet currently has the shortest price for Brooklyn at +215.
There’s no question that Kyrie Irving is a big part of the Brooklyn Nets championship puzzle. But even without him, they are still serious title contenders. Kevin Durant and James Harden are among the early MVP betting favorites and if they can avoid injuries, there’s no doubt this Brooklyn team has what it takes to win it all, with or without Irving.
