Pistons’ No. 1 Pick
— NBA (@NBA) July 30, 2021
As expected, the Detroit Pistons selected Cunningham with the first overall pick of the 2021 NBA Draft held last Thursday. Cunningham was the consensus favorite to be the top pick of the draft and the only question was whether the Pistons would keep him or pick him for someone else.
Detroit was rumored to be willing to trade the top pick for an equitable return and were also torn between Cunningham, Jalen Green, and Evan Mobley. In the end though, the Pistons realized that they would be passing up on a player whom many draft experts consider to be a generational talent.
The 19-year old was consensus First Team All-American this past season for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The 6-8 guard averaged 20.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.6 steals per game in his lone collegiate season.
With his size, three-point shooting, passing skills, and excellent footwork, his game is tailor-made for the pro-ranks. He should fit in well with a young Pistons team who doesn’t have somebody with his game. With the playing time and opportunity he’ll get, there’s no question why he is the odds on favorite to win 2022 Rookie of the Year honors.

While the Pistons picked the most NBA-ready prospect and the best player in the draft class today, the Houston Rockets may have selected the player with the most potential among this year’s draftees. In fact, if he joined another draft class, Jalen Green would’ve been picked first overall.
A five-star recruit from California, Green was the MVP of the 2017 FIBA Under-17 World Cup where Team USA won gold. He skipped college and made history by becoming the first player to be signed by the NBA G League Ignite team, a developmental team in the G League. Green averaged 17.9 points and shot 36.5% from three-point range during the G League’s Orlando bubble last season.
USC big man Evan Mobley was selected third overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers and he is third in the opening Rookie of the Year odds boards behind the two players picked ahead of him last Thursday. And like Green, many believe that Mobley could’ve been the top pick in a another draft class.
Mobley was dominant in his lone season for the Trojans. He average 16.4 points , 8.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 2.9 blocks per game in 33 NCAA games. Mobley swept the Pac-12’s major individual awards, taking home the Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Player of the Year trophies last season.
