- Marcus Smart and Robert Williams are the only teammates in the Top 10 of the Defensive Player of the Year odds boards at the best NBA betting sites..
- The Celtics rank first in the NBA in scoring defense and defensive rating.
- Williams ranks 2nd in the league in blocks while Smart is 4th in steals.
No question, Jayson Tatum has been one of the main reasons for Boston’s success. Tatum was named as the NBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week in two out of the previous three weeks.
In 11 games played this month, he is averaging 33.6 points per game while shooting 53.6% from the field and 46.7% from behind the three-point arc. During that span, the Celtics have won 10 out of 11 games and now have moved to within one game of the top spot in the East.
But aside from Tatum, and Jaylen Brown, it’s the Boston defense that has really been the difference-maker for the Celtics.
In their last game played, the Celtics defeated the Utah Jazz 125-97, shutting down an offense that entered the game ranked 6th in the NBA in scoring at 113.7 points per game and had scored 100+ points in its previous 12 games played. In the last 15 games ( March 25 cutoff ), the Celtics have the top-rated offense, defense, and net rating in the entire NBA.

If the Boston offense has Tatum and Brown, its defense has Robert Williams and Marcus Smart. Add Al Horford to the four and that’s the Boston starting lineup which has an offensive rating of 118.2 and a defensive rating of 94.2 points per 100 possessions. Both offensive and defensive ratings would rank 1st among NBA teams this season and the net rating of their starting unit is the best among any 5-man lineup in the league this season.
Williams ranks second in Blocks at 2.2 per game and has the second most blocks in the league this season with 133. Smart meanwhile is tied for 4th in the entire NBA with 1.7 steals per game and his total of 109 steals this season is tied for 5th most in the league. Williams also ranks 3rd in the league in win shares with 3.8 while Smart is tied for 7th with 3.3. Not surprisingly, Williams leads the league with a defensive rating of 102.0 and Smart is 19th at 106.6, while being only one of three guards in the Top 20.
With Williams taking care of the rebounds and shot blocks while Marcus Smart picking up the steals, it’s no wonder that the Celtics have the best defense in the NBA this season. And it’s no surprise why there are two Celtics on Top of the Defensive Player of the Year odds boards at the best NBA betting sites.
