Celtics NBA Championship Green Background

  • The Boston Celtics are through to the NBA Finals after beating the Miami Heat 100-96 in Sunday’s Game 7 at the FTX Arena.
  • Boston was listed at +4000 odds to win the 2022 NBA championship during the preseason.
  • The Celtics open as -3.5 point underdogs to the Golden State Warriors in Game 1 and +135 bottom dogs to win the Finals series.

The 2022 NBA Finals matchup is set as the Boston Celtics outlasted the Miami Heat 100-96 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Sunday night.

Boston led wire-to-wire but needed Jimmy Butler to miss a potential go-ahead three-pointer in the final seconds of the game to secure the win. The Celtics looked comfortably ahead and were up by 11 with just three minutes left to play. But the Heat had one final run as they scored nine unanswered points to cut the deficit to 96-98 on a three-pointer by Max Strus. After the Butler miss, Marcus Smart made two free throws off a foul by Bam Adebayo for the final tally.

Revenge Tour Complete

By beating the Heat, the 2022 Boston Celtics completed their revenge tour by outsing another team that ended their season in previous years. In round 1, the Celtics eliminated the Brooklyn Nets who beat them in the first round last season. In the second round, Boston sent home the defending champions Milwaukee Bucks who eliminated them in the second round of the 2019 NBA Playoffs. As for the Heat, the Celtics avenged their 2020 Conference Finals loss to Miami. Now it’s on to a bigger fish to fry in the Finals.

Boston will be making its first trip to the NBA Finals since 2010 when they lost to the L.A. Lakers in seven games. The Celtics had preseason odds of +4000 to win the 2022 NBA title and are the third straight team after the Heat in 2020 (+6000) and Suns in 2021 (+4000) to make the Finals with preseason odds longer than +3000. They were a +3500 on January 1st and were 25-25 SU on January 28th. Boston has lost just 12 games since then – six in the regular season and six in the playoffs.

More impressively, they have won two Game 7s against formidable opposition. They beat the defending champions, Milwaukee Bucks, after trailing the series 3-2. On Sunday, they beat the East top seed Heat in Miami after blowing a huge chance to finish them off in Game 6 on their home floor. The Finals however will be a different challenge against the most experienced playoff team in the league and the odds on favorite to win the 2022 NBA championship.
