The 43-year old retired football star first talked about celebrity boxing when he made an appearance on the “I AM ATHLETE” podcast last Monday with former NFL players Brandon Marshall, Channing Crowder, and Fred Taylor. In that guesting, Ochocinco hinted at a June 6th fight and even gave himself the nickname “Sweet Feet Johnson”.
A six-time Pro Bowl and three-time First Team All-Pro selection, Johnson played his first 10 NFL seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He played one season with the New England Patriots before he was cut by the Miami Dolphins during the training camp of the 2012 NFL season.
Johnson, who changed his name to Ochocinco because his jersey number was #85, has no previous boxing experience although he trained in Mayweather’s boxing club during offseasons when he was still playing for the NFL. He is also an avid combat sports fan, even infamousy betting $50K on Jorge Masvidal to beat Kamaru Usman at UFC 261. However, this will be the first time he will be stepping inside the boxing ring.

Late last month, it was announced that undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. will return to the boxing ring to face YouTube star Logan Paul on June 6th. Mayweather has not fought inside the ring since defeating Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in an exhibition match held in Japan in 2018. Prior to that, Mayweather knocked out MMA superstar Conor McGregror in what stands as the biggest celebrity boxing match ever.
Meanwhile, Logan Paul has boxed only twice, and just once professionally. He actually started this celebrity boxing matches when he fought fellow YouTube artist KSI in a white collar boxing match in 2018 that ended in a draw. The two had a rematch in November 2019 in a pro boxing bout. Logan Paul lost that bout via split decision.
Other fights in the Mayweather-Logan Paul undercard include Badou Jack vs Jean Pascal for the WBA regular light heavyweight title, and former 154-pound champion Jarrett Hurd returning for the first time in 1 ½ years against Luis Arias.
