Charles Oliveira, Islam Makhachev Top Favorites to Be Alex Volkanovski’s Next Foe

Alexander Volkanovski Who Wants It

  • Alexander Volkanovski has asked to fight the winner of the UFC 280 lightweight title fight between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev.
  • Oliveira has opened as the +200 betting favorite to be Volkanovski’s next opponent, with Makhachev next at +225.
  • No. 4 ranked featherweight Josh Emmett is next at +400 odds.

Is Alex Volkanovski moving up in weight for his next bout?

We ask that question because according to the online betting site Bovada, the top two betting favorites to be Voklanovski’s next opponents are Charles Oliveria (+200) and Islam Makhachev (+225).

Volkanovski recently defeated Max Holloway at UFC 276 and not only put an exclamation point on their rivalry, but established himself as the best featherweight in the game. With Volk making easy work of the fighter that is considered the biggest threat in his title reign, then the rest of the division might be a walk in the park for him.

Volkanovski Wants UFC 280 Winner

Volkanovski was linked to a fight with Charles Oliveria after beating Holloway, even opening as the slight +110 betting underdog at online sportsbook BetOnline in a potential Do Bronx bout. When UFC President Dana White was asked about the possibility of Volkanovski fighting for the lightweight belt, he said Volkanovski can do whatever he wants if he beats Holloway.

But the UFC recently made official the fight between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev for the vacant UFC lightweight title at UFC 280 on October 22, leaving Volkanovski out in the cold. However, the featherweight king has publicly asked for the winner of that bout.

Makhahev is currently the -200 betting favorite to beat Oliveira who is listed at +170 odds. But considering those odds have narrowed since Makhachev opened at much higher odds, the bout could be as even as it could get, although Bovada’s Volkanovski odds might suggest that Oliveira has the slight advantage against Makhachev.

Henry Cejudo Wants a Shot at Volkanovski

Second on the Bovada odds board is Josh Emmett at +300 as he is the no. 4 ranked featherweight in the UFC. But the name that intrigues the most is former flyweight and bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo who had a face-to-face encounter with Volkanovski backstage after the Holloway trilogy. In that meeting, Cejudo politely called out Volkanovski to a super fight, to which Volk said “let’s see if we can make that happen”.

Cejudo is retired but has been asking UFC President Dana White to give him a shot at Volkanovski. It remains to be seen if White will let Cejudo skip the line to get a crack at the featherweight title. But considering the interest that fight may get from the fans, Triple C at +450 odds is definitely intriguing. Another super fight on the list is against bantamweight champion Aljo Sterling at +700.

Also listed at +700 is current no. 2 featherweight Yair Rodriguez who defeated Brian Ortega last weekend after Ortega suffered an injury during their bout. Meanwhile, no. 5 featherweight Calvin Kattar completes the Bovada odds board at +1100. Kattar is coming off a loss to Emmett in his last bout.
