John Wall Rumors Didn’t Move Clippers’ Championship Odds

John Wall Clippers Odds Unchanged

  • John Wall’s expected move to the L.A. Clippers did not move the needle at the top NBA sportsbooks.
  • Caesars Sportsbook said that the Clippers’ odds remain unchanged despite the possibility of John Wall going there.
  • BetMGM and some top NBA betting sites moved the Clippers’ odds a day after the John Wall news broke out but still, the 2022 NBA champions Golden State Warriors are the consensus odds-on-favorite to win the 2023 NBA championship.

John Wall going to the L.A. Clippers doesn’t move the needle. At least that’s what NBA betting site Caesars Sportsbook says.

The Clippers opened with +750 odds to win the NBA title at that sportsbook, which is third-best behind only the 2022 NBA champions Golden State Warriors who are at +550 and the 2022 Eastern Conference champions Boston Celtics who opened at +600 odds.

After news of Wall’s plan to sign with the Clippers after his expected contract buyout with the Houston Rockets, many expected the Clippers’ odds to move up. But as Caesars said, L.A.’s odds are still the same, well at least for now:

Rockets Buy-Out Wall’s Contract

The Rockets officially announced on Monday that the team had reached a buyout agreement with Wall for the final season of his current contract. Houston acquired Wall from the Washington Wizards in 2020 in the deal that brought Russell Westbrook to the Nation’s Capital.

Wall played 40 games for the Rockets during the 2020-21 campaign, averaging 20.6 points and 6.9 assists per game. However, Wall and the Rockets mutually agreed that he sit out the entire 2021-22 season so the team can prioritize the development of guards Kevin Porter Jr. and Jalen Green. Wall exercised his $47.3 million player option with the Rockets last June 22nd. But he later agreed to give back $6.5 million to earn his freedom.

According to NBA journalist Adrian Wojnarowski, Wall plans to sign with the Clippers after the buyout. Now that the buyout is official, Wall still needs to clear the waivers to be able to sign with the team of his choice – the Clippers according to Woj. But if Woj’s tweets during the 2022 NBA Draft caused the odds boards to fluctuate, his news on Wall did not, according to Caesars Sportsbook.

BetMGM Moved the Clippers’ Title Odds

But while Wojnarowski’s news on Wall did not cause the betting boards to fluctuate, several top NBA sportsbooks shortened the Clippers’ odds. One such betting site was BetMGM which moved the Clippers from +750 to +600 and from the third favorite to the second favorite, with the Celtics dropping to +650.

Bet365 and the FD Sportsbook also moved the Clippers to +600 but at the two sportsbooks, the Clippers and Celtics are tied as the second favorite. The BetOnline App also moved the Clippers to second at +550, with the Warriors slightly ahead at +525. The DK Sportsbook made the most drastic move, putting the Clippers in a tie with the Warriors at the top with their +550 price.

It remains to be seen which sportsbooks are correct with their current prices. There’s no question that at 31 years of age, John Wall is still in his prime. If he can return to his All-Star level, he is going to be a huge addition for any team, including the Clippers if that’s where he is really headed to. However, adding that the third star isn’t a guarantee of title success in the NBA anymore as it was when the Heat formed the Big 3 with LeBron and Bosh. Teams built from the bottom up like the Warriors, Celtics, and Grizzlies are proving that champions are built not bought. Or even bought out.
