Conor McGregor’s return to lightweight is scheduled to take place in a little over a week. Unsurprisingly, fans are already looking ahead to some of the possible bouts he could be involved in later this year. Many now believe that Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz are on a collision course to face each other at 155 pounds.

These men engaged in two of the most-watched MMA fights of all time a few years ago. Just about everyone wants to see how a third fight would play out. Now is a perfect time to discuss what needs to happen for this to come together.

Let’s get into it!

McGregor vs. Poirier is Shaping Up to Be a Massive PPV Event

Since Conor McGregor’s last performance in the UFC back in January of 2020, fans have been eagerly awaiting his return. He looked incredible in that bout, needing just 47 seconds to dispatch of Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Unfortunately, it was the only fight he engaged in last year.

Due to the obvious complications around the world, Conor was unable to compete aside from that performance in January. That doesn’t mean he’s been taking time away from the sport, though. “Notorious” has remained in fantastic shape and is now set to take on Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 257 on January 23.

It’s a massive fight for the lightweight division. The winner is likely to find themselves competing for the 155-pound belt in their next outing. Many analysts now believe this will end up being the biggest Pay-Per-View event in recent history.

Everyone is curious to see how things play out. Conor and Dustin first competed back in 2014 in the featherweight division. In that bout, McGregor earned an impressive 1st-round knockout. This win solidified him as a true star in the UFC.

Poirier has looked incredible since that bout. Most recently, he defeated Dan Hooker in one of the best fights of 2020. This is a huge fight and one that will draw in viewers from all around the world. Even the best analysts are having a difficult time predicting how the contest will play out.

Win or lose, Conor has some massive fights on the horizon. There seems to be one that fans seem to be calling for the most.

More Fans Call to See Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz Fight Again

Back in March of 2016, one of the most historical bouts in UFC history took place. Initially, Conor McGregor was supposed to take on Rafael Dos Anjos on that night. It was set to be McGregor’s first crack at the UFC lightweight title.

About two weeks before the bout, news broke that Dos Anjos was forced to withdraw due to a foot injury. It was a huge blow to the UFC, who had invested millions promoting the matchup. Officials within the company began scrambling to find a suitable replacement.

Eventually, Nate Diaz stepped up to take on McGregor. Most online sports betting sites listed him as the considerable underdog. To the surprise of fans everywhere, Diaz ended up submitting Conor with a rear-naked choke in the second round. A rematch took place six months later and this time, McGregor won via majority decision.

The trilogy fight between these men has yet to come together. This week, Conor told the media this is a fight he would love to see in the near future. He seems open to challenging Diaz at either lightweight or welterweight.

“There are dangling carrots … treasure chests that get presented to me,” Conor said. “We’ve got world titles in boxing now, there’s talks of … I hear Dana talking (about) Nate Diaz coming back down to lightweight. I love that. I’d love to compete against Diaz. We will compete again. If that happens at lightweight for a title, that would be something special, also. So there’s many great options that are in the works and let’s see what happens. I am ready.”

Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz are two of the most popular fighters in UFC history. It seems likely that the UFC would be interested in booking the rubber match between them. First, however, we’ll need to wait and see what takes place between Conor and Dustin later this month.

Breaking Down the Odds for UFC 257

The UFC was smart to book the McGregor vs. Poirier fight to headline the first PPV event of UFC 257. This is a great way for the promotion to kick-start the year. As we mentioned earlier, it will likely be one of the highest-selling events in history.

Many are now heading over to BetOnline to bet on all of this event’s fights. Obviously, the majority of wagers are coming in on the main event between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. Many feel it offers an amazing opportunity to cash out.
