- Brandon Moreno earned the flyweight title in June by submitting Deivison Figueiredo in the third round.
- Cody Garbrandt continues to hint at a future move down to the flyweight division.
- New rumors claim that Garbrandt will be chosen as the next challenger for Brandon Moreno.
This past June, Brandon Moreno put on a career-best performance to capture the UFC flyweight championship of the world against Deivison Figueiredo. Fans have been eager to hear what is next for the young Mexican superstar. New reports indicate former bantamweight Cody Garbrandt could be the next challenger for Brandon Moreno.
Cody has faced some rough patches in recent years, yet he could find new life at 125 pounds. He would be facing a major challenge in Moreno, though. Now is the perfect time to talk about how this fight could play out.
Let’s get into it!
Is Brandon Moreno On the Path to Becoming a Global MMA Star?
The career of Brandon Moreno is one of the most inspiring in all of MMA. After a career on the regional scene in Mexico and California, he made his move to the big leagues by earning a spot on The Ultimate Fighter. Brandon was picked last on the show and was eliminated in the opening round by Alexandre Pantoja.
The UFC gave Moreno another shot in the UFC and he took full advantage, earning three-straight wins over solid competition. He then suffered two losses and was released from the promotion. Brandon picked up a solid win in the LFA before making his return to the UFC.
This second stint with the promotion is where things truly began coming together for Moreno. He racked up win after win against the top flyweights in the world such as Kai Kara-France and Jussier Formiga. He was then matched up in a title fight with Deivison Figueiredo and went to an incredible draw with the champion.
Last June, the rematch between these men finally took place. Moreno came into this bout a completely different fighter and immediately began picking Figueiredo apart. He hurt him in the third round before securing an incredible rear-naked choke victory.
It seems as if Moreno is on the road to becoming one of the first true superstars in the flyweight division. He is a likable character and has one of the most fan-friendly styles of any fighter in the UFC. Of course, it will take some more wins for him to reach the level of superstardom that fighters like Conor McGregor possess.
Moreno didn’t take much damage in the rematch with Figueiredo and will likely return to the cage soon. Here’s a look at who he may face in the cage next.
Fans are Pushing for Cody Garbrandt to be the Next Challenger for Brandon Moreno
The UFC’s flyweight division has been criticized for its lack of depth in the past. That argument cannot be made for the division just ten pounds heavier. Bantamweight is one of the most stacked weight classes in all of MMA, featuring a huge number of exciting finishers.
There was a time when Cody Garbrandt was considered the best bantamweight fighter on the planet. He has since lost four of his past five bouts, however, and some feel he quickly blew past his fighting prime. Cody disagrees, and feels that a move down to 125 pounds could revive his career.
Garbrandt has been considering a move to flyweight for years. Many now feel that “No Love” should end up being the next challenger for Brandon Moreno. Brandon spoke about this possibility to the media and seems open to a future bout against Garbrandt.
“It’s obvious Figueiredo wants the next one because he lost the last one,” Brandon said. “But man, the last fight, I dominated him, in the first round, in striking, in grappling, in wrestling, so obviously I’m open to fight again with him. But I think he needs to fight with somebody. Cody Garbrandt wants to come in to the division, and I know he’s not in the best part of his career, but he’s a good name. He’s a former champ. He has a really good brand behind him. He’s an option.”
In terms of generating fan interest, there is likely no bigger fight at flyweight than the one between Garbrandt and Brandon Moreno. It’s not easy to argue that Cody deserves this shot, though. There are plenty of other flyweights that likely should be in the discussion for a title shot at 125 pounds first.
The UFC has yet to make any formal announcements on this situation. Fortunately, it appears the promotion has finally figured out when the book the next bantamweight title fight!
