Cris Cyborg is heavily favored to retain her Bellator women’s featherweight belt against Arlene Blencowe at Bellator 279.

According to the best MMA betting sites, Cyborg is the massive -1800 favorite and Blencowe the huge +800 bottom dog in the event’s headliner. Bellator 279 will be held on April 23, 2022, at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Cyborg’s Unbeaten Bellator Run Continues

Cyborg has won four straight bouts since signing with Bellator, all via stoppage. One of those victories was a second-round submission win over Blencowe in her first Bellator title defense in October 2020. The Brazilian, who now lives and trains in California, is coming off a first-round knockout win over Sinead Kavanagh at Bellator 271 last November 12, 2021.

The 36-year-old Cyborg is the only fighter to win world titles in four major MMA organizations – UFC, Bellator, Strikeforce, and Invicta FC. She rose to prominence when she became the first fighter to beat MMA pioneer Gina Carano and sent her to retirement. Overall, Cyborg has a record of 25-2 with 20 knockouts and one submission win. Her only loss since 2005 came against Amanda Nunes, the current UFC women’s featherweight champion.

Cyborg has been an underdog only once in her entire MMA career, and that was when she fought Shayna Bazsler at +195 odds in 2008. She won that bout via second-round knockout. Since then, Cyborg has been the betting favorite in 22 consecutive bouts, including during her loss to Nunes.

Blencowe Defeats Pam Sorenson via Unanimous Decision

Blencowe is the no. 1 women’s featherweight contender at Bellator MMA. The 39-year-old from New South Wales is the first Australian to sign with the promotion. Blencowe won four straight bouts to earn a crack at Cyborg at Bellator 249 but lost the fight via submission. Since that loss, she has won back-to-back fights including a unanimous decision win over Pam Sorenson in the undercard of Cyborg’s last title defense.

A former professional boxer, Blencowe is the most tenured female featherweight in Bellator with 12 bouts fought. She wasn’t expecting to get the rematch and was looking ahead to fighting during the second half of the year when she got the call to fight for the title for the second time.

This marks the fifth time that Blencowe has been the underdog under Bellator. She was listed at +450 versus Marloes Coenen in 2015. The Australian was also the +450 bottom dog during her first bout with Julia Budd and was also the +340 underdog in the rematch. She was also a massive +900 during her first bout with Cyborg. Blencowe lost all four bouts.
