  • The Dallas Cowboys were the best team against the betting spread this season at 13-4 ATS.
  • Dallas was especially good on the road where they covered the spread in eight out of nine games away from Cowboys Stadium.
  • The Cowboys head to Sunday’s wild card game against the 49ers as -3 point betting favorites.

The Dallas Cowboys had a tough year last season when they lost Dak Prescott to a season-ending injury. But not only has Prescott successfully returned this campaign but he’s also looked better than ever and the Cowboys had a great bounce-back year.

Dallas finished the regular season as the third seed in the NFC and they will be at home for the wild card round. But the Cowboys did not just win this season, they were also excellent against the betting spread. Aside from making the playoffs, Dallas also rewarded their backers by being the best team in the NFL against the betting spread.

From Worst to First

Not only did the Cowboys go from third in the NFC West at 6-10 SU last season to 12-5 SU this year while winning the division title, but they also went from a league-worst 5-11 ATS in 2020 to the best ATS mark in the NFL this season at 13-4 ATS.

Dallas was nearly spotless on the road this season with an 8-1 ATS mark or a cover rate of 88.9% and an impressive ATS plus/minus of +10.5 and an average margin of victory of 10.8 points per game. As road favorites, the Cowboys were 5-0 ATS with an ATS plus/minus of 5.6 points per game and an average margin of victory of 12.5 points per game.

Dallas swept its division games this season and went a perfect 6-0 ATS with an ATS plus/minus of 14.5 points per game and an average margin of victory of 22.2 points per game against their NFC East rivals. The Cowboys were also near perfect against their fellow NFC Conference teams at 11-1 ATS with an ATS plus/minus of +11.0 and an average winning margin of 15.8 points per game. The question now for the Cowboys is could they carry the success in the playoffs?

Cowboys vs 49ers

Five out of the last six times that the Cowboys have faced the 49ers in the postseason, the winner of the game went on to win the Super Bowl. On Sunday, Dallas hosts San Francisco in the NFC wild card round with the Cowboys currently listed as -3 point favorites to beat the 49ers. But the stakes are different this season.

The Cowboys only have the 4th best odds to win the NFC at +575 while the 49ers are one spot lower than them at +1100. Dallas is just 8th in the latest Super Bowl betting board at BetOnline with their +1000 odds. San Francisco meanwhile, have the 4th longest odds at +2500.

Still, the rivalry between the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers makes Sunday’s game one of the most anticipated. From 1992-95, the Super Bowl champions were either the Cowboys or 49ers and both teams had 5 titles each after that period. But the rivalry went cold with the teams unable to make the playoffs during the same season since 1998. On Sunday, they will meet again.
