- Yair Rodriguez has only competed three times in MMA since 2018.
- He was expected to fight Zabit Magomedsharipov in August before dropping out due to injury.
- Dana White claims Yair Rodriguez’s next fight may not take place anytime soon.
Over the next few months, several massive UFC featherweight fights are scheduled to take place. The division is stacked and many fighters here seem on the brink of a title fight. Unfortunately, UFC President Dana White claims Yair Rodriguez’s next fight may not come anytime soon.
Yair is one of the most exciting fighters in MMA. He’s struggled to maintain a consistent schedule, however, and the UFC seems to be getting frustrated.
Now is a great time to discuss what may be next for the talented young striker.
The UFC is Gearing Up for Another Return to Fight Island
For most of 2020, the UFC has been splitting its operations between Las Vegas and “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi. It’s been incredible to see the world’s biggest MMA promotion find ways to put on domestic and international fight cards. For the most part, the busy schedule has been successful.
Since late October, the UFC has been holding its events at the Apex Center in Las Vegas. There are three more events scheduled to take place here in 2020. On January 16th, the UFC is expected to make its return to Fight Island.
2021 is already shaping up to be a huge year for the sport. January will feature several massive events. None is bigger than the lightweight clash between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. These men are fighting on January 23rd in what should decide the next challenger for the 155-pound title.
McGregor remains the biggest star in MMA. This fight against Poirier is a rematch of their first clash back in 2014. Sites like BetOnline are offering some incredible odds for each of these men to win.
At the moment, Conor is listed as the -235 favorite here. He appears to be in fantastic shape and has some of the best striking in the UFC. Poirier has improved massively since his first fight against McGregor and might be a fighter worth betting on with current odds of +200.
There are some huge fights taking place over the next couple of months. Don’t expect to see Yair Rodriguez competing, though.
What is Delaying Yair Rodriguez’s Next Fight From Being Booked?
MMA fans love when exciting young prospects burst onto the scene. That’s exactly what has taken place with Yair Rodriguez. He entered the UFC back in 2014 and has already recorded wins over several legends.
The main issue with Yair is his inability to consistently fight. He’s only competed three times since 2018 due to injury and scheduling problems. The proposed fight with Yair and Zabit Magomedsharipov has fallen apart on several occasions.
Dana White seems to be getting annoyed by this fact. He was recently asked about reports that Yair was back in the gym training. Unfortunately, the UFC President wasn’t able to offer any news on Yair Rodriguez’s next fight.
“Yair? Have we not talked publicly about that?” White told reporters. “Why not? I don’t think he’s going to fight soon. We didn’t announce it, I don’t know why we didn’t but yeah, I don’t know what the deal is. It’s none of my business what’s going on there. So when it comes out, it comes out. It’s none of our business, none of the UFC’s business. When they figure it out they’ll let us know.”
White has accused Yair of turning down fights in the past. Some believe his recent comments are due to the same reason. Nothing has been official, however, and Rodriguez has not committed to any fights in the future.
Fans are obviously disappointed. With a solid win or two, he could be competing for the featherweight title. We’ll continue offering updates on this situation over the next few weeks!
Hermansson vs. Vettori Now Headlines the UFC Event This Saturday
As we’ve mentioned several times, the UFC has found success holding events on a regular basis this year. That doesn’t mean things have gone perfectly, though. We’ve seen many high-profile bouts canceled due to illness throughout 2020.
We can now add Saturday’s main event to that list. Initially, this fight was expected to feature Jack Hermansson against Darren Till. News broke on November 6th that Till was forced out due to injury. Kevin Holland then agreed to step into the fight against Jack.
Holland then announced he too was forced out of this bout due to illness. On short notice, Marvin Vettori agreed to this main event. It’s been official and Hermansson vs. Vettori are now set to compete in a five-round bout this Saturday evening.
Odds for this bout are being offered now, too! Hermansson had a full training camp leading into this fight, yet he still comes in as the +110 underdog. Marvin Vettori is a clear talent and enters this main event as the -130 favorite.
This is a huge fight for the middleweight division. The winner will likely find themselves in or near the top-five. Hopefully, this main event doesn’t come across any more issues and the fight takes place on Saturday.
