Darvin Ham Lakers NBA Background

  • Milwaukee Bucks lead assistant coach Darvin Ham is the new betting favorite to be the Lakers head coach.
  • Opening favorite Quinn Snyder has dropped from +450 to +1200 after saying that he is “less interested” in the job because of the way the Lakers handled Frank Vogel’s exit.
  • The Lakers fired Vogel at the end of the 2021-22 season after they failed to make the playoffs two seasons after winning the NBA title.

Milwaukee Bucks lead assistant head coach Darvin Ham is the new odds on favorite to become the Los Angeles Lakers’ next head coach.

The Lakers fired head coach Frank Vogel after the team failed to make the playoffs despite opening the season with the second best odds to win the 2022 NBA title. Since Vogel’s departure there have been too many names thrown in the Lakers’ vacancy but right now, Ham stands out among the group as he is the only potential candidate that has an upcoming interview with the team.

Lakers Set to Interview Ham

According to a report from the L.A. Times, the Lakers have received the go-signal to interview ham after seeking permission to do so. Ham was an assistant coach for the Lakers under Mike Brown from 2011 to 2013 before he left for the same job with the Atlanta Hawks.

Ham played 417 regular season games in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, Washington Wizards, Milwaukee Bucks, Atlanta Hawks, and Detroit Pistons. An undrafted player in 1996, Ham became famous for shattering a backboard during an NCAA tournament game against North Carolina.

His lone head coaching stint was with the New Mexico Thunderbirds in the G-League from 2010-to 11. However, his work with Mike Budenholzer in Milwaukee since 2018 has earned him the reputation as one of the best assistant coaches in the NBA, one that is considered ready to take on a head coaching job in the big league. Ham interviewed for the Minnesota and Washington vacancies in 2019 and the Clippers and Pacers openings in 2020.

Quinn Snyder “Less Interested” in Lakers Job

Last April, Jazz head coach Quinn Snyder opened as the betting favorite to be the Lakers’ next head coach at +450 odds. However, Snyder has come out to say that he is “less interested” in joining the Lakers after how the team dismissed Frank Vogel. Like Ham, Snyder was an assistant under Mike Brown. Snyder is still in the latest BetOnline odds boards but at +1200 odds.

Second, behind Ham on the current betting boards is former Portland Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts who took the Blazers to 8 consecutive trips to the playoffs. Stotts is currently listed at +500. Next to Stotts is former Charlotte Hornets head coach Steve Clifford at +600. Clifford is followed by former Warriors head coach Mark Jackson at +700. Jackson was the second favorite at +600 behind Snyder when the betting lines opened last April.

Meanwhile, Sixers head coach and former Clippers head coach Doc Rivers, Michigan head coach Juwan Howard, former Lakers head coach Mike Brown, and Nurse are all listed at +1000. Among the Lakers’ assistant coaches, only David Fizdal is on the list at +1400 behind Quinn Snyder. Interesting names on the list include Phil Jackson at +10000 and LeBron James at +15000.
