Former world no. 1 Dustin Johnson has been installed by the best golf sportsbooks as the odds on favorite to win the LIV Invitational golf tournament in London.

The two-time PGA major winner has opened as the +450 betting favorite to win the inaugural tournament of the newly-formed Saudi-backed golf league. The tournament, which begins on Thursday, will be held at the Centurion Club in London.

Dustin Johnson Resigns From the PGA Tour

Johnson announced last Tuesday his immediate resignation from the PGA Tour and bared his plans to join only LIV golf events and major tournaments moving forward. The announcement was made by the golfer during the opening conference of LIV Golf’s first event at the Centurion Golf Club in London. According to DJ, he had carefully considered the move over the past six months and felt that it was the correct one.

DJ also said that he expects to play in the majors, including next week’s U.S.Open at Brookline, Massachusetts where he is tied with Brooks Koepka at +3000 with the 8th best odds to win the tournament. Johnson has a 10-year exemption to play in the U.S. Open by virtue of his 2017 win. The USGA has not shown any hints that it would ban players from LIV Golf from playing in major tournaments.

With the 4th most PGA Tour wins among active golfers, it’s no surprise that Johnson has opened as the favorite to win the first LIV Golf tournament. So far, he is arguably its biggest catch. DJ missed the cut at the PGA Championships but was a T9 in The Players Championship and a T12 at the Masters.

42 Golfers for the First LIV Golf Tournament

30-year-old Taylor Gooch, whose only PGA Tour win was at the 2021 RSM Classic, is next behind Johnson on the BetOnline betting boards. Gooch was a T20 at the PGA Championship and a T14 at the Masters in Augusta. Meanwhile, the 2010 U.S. Open winner and former world no. 4 Louis Oosthuizen is next behind Gooch at +1100 odds. Oosthuizen’s last win was the 2018 South African Open on the Asian Tour.

2017 Masters winner Sergio Garcia is listed at +1200. The 39-year-old Spaniard has won 36 international tournaments and spent over 450 weeks in the Top 10 of the PGA Tour rankings. Kevin Na is next to Garcia with his +1200 odds. The 5-time PGA Tour winner last won the 2021 Sony Open in Hawaii. The last golfer with odds shorter than +2000 is Austrian Bernd Wiesberger who 8 times on the European Tour and played for Europe in the 2021 Ryder Cup.

Perhaps the biggest name to enter the LIV Golf league outside Dustin Johnson is six-time major winner Phil Mickelson who needs no introduction. Lefty has not won since capturing the 2021 PGA Championship. He will be ending a four-month hiatus at +3300 odds to win in London.
