Dustin Poirier “Guarantees” He Won’t Fight Michael Chandler Next

Dustin Poirier Vs McGregor Vs Michael Chandler

  • Dustin Poirier says he’d rather sell hot sauce rather than fight Chandler next, as UFC President Dana White suggests
  • Chandler knocked out no. 6 lightweight Dan Hooker at UFC 257.
  • Poirier suggested that Chandler should face Oliveira next.

Dustin Poirier says that he’d rather sell hot sauce than fight Michael Chandler. That’s how uninterested he is in fighting the former Bellator lightweight champion.

A Poirier vs Chandler bout is the easiest matchup to make after UFC 257. Poirier knocked out Conor Mcgregor in the main event while Chandler stopped Dan Hooker in the co-headliner.

UFC President Dana White purposely put up two high profile lightweight bouts in the event to entice Khabib Nurmagomedov to come out of retirement and pick and opponent. Unfortunately, Khabib didn’t sound too interested and the lightweight title could be declared vacant very soon.

With that possibility looming, the winners of the main event and co-main event of UFC 257 could easily figure in the next lightweight title fight, at least that’s what UFC President Dana White said at the post UFC 257 press conference. But if you ask Dustin Poirier, he doesn’t think that Michael Chandler is in his level.

Dustin Poirier Vs McGregor Vs Michael Chandler

“I can guarantee I won’t be fighting Michael Chandler. They can do whatever they want with the division. I don’t really care. If something makes sense, then we’ll do it.”/span>

What Makes Sense For Poirier?

According to Porier, he is more interested in fighting Conor McGregor in a grudge match McGregor knocked out Poirier in 2014 and Dustin returned the favor last weekend. Poirier said that with each of them holding a win against each other, it would be logical to settle the score with a third and deciding bout.

Aside from McGregor, Poirier also talked about fighting Nate Diaz who called out Poirier after UFC 257. The Diamond says he would love to shut Nate Diaz up because he’s been talking too much on social media.

Poirier didn’t mention any other name but said that he will have to sit down with the UFC and talk about the fights that make sense for him. But as he said, there’s no way in hell he’s fighting Michael Chandler, at least not now.

What About Michael Chandler?

Chandler was the UFC’s prized recruit last year. A former three-time Bellator Lightweight champion, He also won the promotion’s Bellator Season 4 Lightweight tournament. The former All-American wrestler from the University of Missouri, Chandler served as the back-up fighter for Khabib vs Gaethje last year.

The 34-year old Chandler became a free agent after Bellator 243. He signed with the UFC in September 2020 and after UFC 254, he has been actively campaigning for his UFC debut. After failing to land a fight with any Top 5 lightweight, Chandler settled for the 6th ranked Hooker.

At the UFC 257 co-main event, Chandler stopped Hooker in impressive fashion. With a statement win like that, he deserves to be in the title picture as well. However, Poirier thinks that Chandler should fight no.3 Charles Oliveira first before challenging for the belt.. Oliveira has picked up eight consecutive victories, including seven via stoppage. If there’s any lightweight fighter out there who deserves a title shot soon, it’s Oliveira.

The UFC’s lightweight division is now one of the most exciting weight classes in the promotion with stars like Poirier, McGregor, Gaethje, and Oliveira looking to land a spot in the next title shot. WIth Nurmagomedov not returning soon, a lightweight title fight is in the horizon.
