Raducanu and Fernandez set the stage for an all-teen final at the U.S. Open in New York. Both women had to beat great odds to set up only the fourth grand slam final featuring two players ranked outside the WTA’s Top 50 rankings since the rankings were put in place in 1975.
British sensation Raducanu had to win three qualifying matches before advancing to the women’s draw. In all, Raducanu played 10 matches and never dropped a single set along the way. Her 20 consecutive sets won at a single U.S. Open tournament is a record. She lost five games in a set only once, during round 2 of the qualifiers. In her six main draw matches before the finals, Raducanu dropped only four games in a set three times.
But while Raducanu swept past solid but not elite competition, Fernandez slayed more giants than any underdog in the history of the U.S. Open. The Canadian teen became the first player to beat three Top 5 players in a single U.S. Open. At online sportsbook BetOnline, Fernandez was a +370 underdog against Osaka, a +260 against no.5 Svitolina in the quarters, and +300 against no. 2 Aryna Sabalenka.

Following their breakthrough performances, the stage is now set for Raducannu and Fernandez to conquer Melbourne Park. Raducanu is placed so high in the Bet365 odds boards that she has better odds than world no. 2 Sabalenka who is currently listed at +1000. World no. 3 Karolina Pliskova is currently listed at +1600.
Meanwhile, Fernandez has the same odds as no. 13 Maria Sakkari and no. 7 Barbora Krejcikova at +2000. The Canadian has shorter odds than no. 7 Sofia Kenin who is currently listed at +2500 along with no. 10 Petra Kvitova, no.17 Elena Rybakina, and no. 12 Belinda Bencic.
The 2022 Australian Open tennis tournament will be held from January 17 to January 30th at Melbourne Park in Australia. It will mark Raducanu’s first appearance in Melbourne. Fernandez meanwhile has played in the Australian Open in 2020 and 2021, losing both times in the first round.
