Erik Spoelstra Miami Heat NBA Background

  • Erik Spoelstra is the new Coach of the Year betting favorite at +650.
  • The Heat are 7-3 after 10 games and have the second best record in the East.
  • Chicago’s Billy Donovan is second at +850 with the Bulls also sporting a 7-3 record.

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra has risen to the top of the NBA Coach of the Year odds boards after leading the head to a strong 7-3 start to the 2021-22 season.

According to the best NBA sportsbooks, Spoelstra is the new +650 odds on favorite, overtaking Chicago’s Billy Donovan who is now listed at +850. Golden State’s Steve Kerr is third at +1000 while Utah’s Quin Snyder and Brooklyn’s Steve Nash are next at +1200 apiece.

One of the Best Records in the NBA

Prior to Monday’s games, the Heat had a 7-2 record which was third-best in the league behind only Golden State’s 8-1 and Philadelphia’s 8–3 mark after Sunday’s games. The Heat also ranked second behind the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference team standings, and are on top of their Southeast division.

Miami opened with a +3500 odds to win the 2022 NBA title but after acquiring guard Kyle Lowry in a trade with the Toronto Raptors during the offseason, Miami saw its title odds improve to +2500. At the start of November, Miami shortened its odds to +1800 but after going 7-2, the Heat are now listed at +1200, their shortest odds since the 2022 NBA championship market opened at BetMGM.

The Heat are currently on a five-game road trip to the Western Conference. They lost Game 1 of that road swing on Monday, falling to the Denver Nuggets 113-96 at the Ball Arena. Despite the loss, they are still no. 1 in their division and no. 2 in the Eastern Conference with their 7-3 record.

Bulls are Also 7-3

Like the Heat, the Bulls are also 7-3 after 10 games played, their best start since 2015. Chicago added DeMar DeRozan, Lonzo Ball, and Alex Caruso during the offseason and they have jelled well with last season’s holdovers. The Bulls are currently on top of the Central Division and are tied with the Heat for the second-best record in the East. It’s no surprise why Billy Donovan is next to Coach Spo in the odds boards at +850.

Kerr meanwhile, has steered the Warriors to the league’s best record at 9-1 after Monday’s games. Golden State is playing so well on both ends of the floor right now that it’s scary when they get Klay Thompson and James Wiseman back. Steve Nash and Kerr opened as the co-betting favorites to win this award but while Kerr’s Warriors are off to a fast start, Nash’s Nets have yet to hit their stride.

Brooklyn is still the +265 odds on favorite to win the 2022 NBA title despite the possibility that they will be without the unvaccinated Kyrie Irving this season. However, the Nets are just 7-4 to start the year and are currently just 6th in the East. Snyder’s Jazz meanwhile are the 2nd best team in the West at 7-3, behind only the Golden State Warriors. The Jazz and Warriors have the same +750 odds at BetOnline to win the 2022 NBA title.
