Top-ranked Alabama became the first team to advance to the national title game with 27-6 a win over no. 4 Cincinnati as -13.5 point chalk in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl classic. Meanwhile, No.3 Georgia defeated No. 2 Michigan 34-11 in the nightcap as the -7.5 point spread favorites in the Capital One Orange Bowl.
Alabama displayed a dominant rushing game and defensive effort to overpower Cincinnati. Brian Robinson Jr. rushed for 204 yards to become the first Tide to rush for over 200 yards in a Bowl Game. Heisman winner Bryce Young tossed three TD passes while the Alabama defense recorded six sacks and six passes defended while conceding only 218 total yards without a touchdown.
Georgia meanwhile, scored on its first five possessions and stopped the Big Ten winners’ vaunted rushing attack. On the biggest stages, Alabama is 4-0 SU against Georgia. The Tide beat the Bulldogs in the 2012 and 2018 SEC Championship games. ‘Bama also beat Georgia in the only CFP championship game meeting between these two powerhouse programs in 2018. That game featured a 13-point second-half comeback and overtime win by Alabama. This year, the Crimson Tide defeated the Bulldogs 41-24 in the SEC title game as +6 point underdogs at the best college football sportsbooks.
That loss stands as the only blot in Georgia’s 2021 campaign and it knocked them off from the top of the top spot in college football. The Bulldogs reigned at the top of the rankings since Alabama was upset by Texas A&M in October and held on to the spot until their paths collided. That game was only the second time since 2009 where the Crimson Tide were underdogs, both against Georgia. For now, they will be bottom dogs for a third straight game against the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will be looking for their first National title since 1980. Meanwhile, the Crimson Tide are in the CFP title game for the sixth time in seven seasons and are looking to win their fourth national title since the current playoff format was installed. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart knows a lot about Alabama as he was Nick Saban’s former assistant. He is, however, 0-4 against his old boss.
