Giga Chikadze Calls Out Max Holloway and Kalvin Kattar, Would Settle For Yair Rodriguez

Gigi Chikadza With Max Holloway And Calvin Kattar

  • Giga Chikadze called out Max Holloway and Calvin Kattar at the UFC Vegas 25 post-event press conference.
  • Chikadze knocked out Cub Swanson in Saturday night’s co-main event.
  • The 32-year old from Georgia says he is also game for a “Ninja fight” with Yair Rodriguez.

After his second consecutive Performance of the Night outing inside the UFC, former GLORY kickboxer Giga Chikadze wants another step-up in level of competition.

The 32-year old from Georgia SSR earned a fight with gatekeeper Cub Swanson after picking up five straight Octagon victories. Chikadze proved his worth on Saturday night by knocking out Swanson with a body kick that folded the veteran inside one minute into their UFC Vegas 25 bout. Now, the Ninja wants a crack at Max Holloway or Calvin Kattar.

Said Chikdaze to MMAJunkie during Saturday’s post-event press conference:

“I was in Georgia when Max fought Calvin. I was doing commentary for the fight, and I enjoyed this fight, and every time he was doing something nice I was like, ‘I want to fight him. I want to fight him. I feel like after this type of performance, I might get it – if not, then I might get (Kattar).”

6-0 In the UFC

Chikadze dazzled in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 25. Not only did he stop Swanson inside the first minute of the fight, he became only the second fighter after Jose Aldo to finish Swanson. And after opening his UFC career with four straight decision wins, Chikadze has picked up back to back first round finishes that have earned him consecutive Performance of the Night honors.

Overall, Chikadze has won eight straight bouts since losing to Austin Springer via rear-naked choke at the Contender Series 10 in his featherweight debut. The former Gladiator Challenge fighter has an overall record of 13-2 with 8 knockouts and one submission win. He is currently ranked 14th in the UFC’s featherweight division but could move up a couple of notches with his impressive stoppage of Swanson.

There’s no doubt that Chikadze deserves a big opponent in his next fight, the only question if how big that opponent will be. After calling out Holloway and Kattar, Chikadze also made known that he would be fine with a “mortal kombat” showdown with Yair Rodriguez if neither Holloway or Kattar are interested in fighting him.

Ninja Fight With Yair Rodriguez

A fight between Chikadze and Rodriguez would indeed be like a war between two ninjas, or a “mortal kombat” showdown between two of the most creative and unorthodox strikers in the UFC today. However, Rodriguez has put himself in a position where he may be one win away from a title shot. It remains to be seen if he is willing to risk his lofty ranking against a high-risk and low-reward opponent like Chikadze.

Holloway and Kattar recently fought and Blessed ended a two-fight losing skid by dominating Kattar. With current champion Alexander Volkanovski not to keen on a third fight with Holloway soon, the former featherweight champion may take a keep-busy fight, while waiting for his title shot. The 5th ranked Kattar may be a sound option for Chikadze. He is coming off a loss to Holloway and is looking to rebuild his stock. Beating a red hot prospect like Chikadze could be a good start. Like Holloway and Rodriguez, Kattar still has no fight booked.

You can’t fault Chikadze for calling out the big names in the division. He’s dominated the opposition the UFC has given him so far and it’s but right for him to test his skills against the big boys of the division. One thing’s sure though, he’s put the featherweight division on notice with his sensational KO win over Cub Swanson.
