- Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez have already fought twice.
- New reports indicate the Golovkin vs. Canelo trilogy may not happen this year.
- Golovkin seems more interested in a fight with Kamil Szeremeta.
Based on new reports, major boxing events will start to resume in June. It’s exciting news for fight fans, as several huge bouts are expected to take place over the next few months. Unfortunately, the Golovkin vs. Canelo trilogy fight may not come together as quickly as most had hoped.
Today, we’re going to look at why exactly this is. We’ll also check out who Gennady Golovkin seems to be interested in fighting right now.
Let’s get into it!
Boxing Events Will Start to Take Place in June
Since March, almost the entire US sports industry has been shut down. Many leagues are still looking at ways to resume their operations. At this point, some feel that major leagues such as the NFL and NBA may not hold their next seasons until next year.
Combat sports have a unique ability to take place right now. We’ve already seen that with the UFC. The MMA leader has already hosted several events over the past few weeks. Three took place in Jacksonville, Florida. One other took place at the Apex Center in Las Vegas.
Some of boxing’s top promoters have looked at ways to start hosting events again for weeks. Bob Arum, the CEO of Top Rank, recently announced that his company gained approval to start holding fight cards in Las Vegas. Arum claims that six events will take place in this city during the month of June.
Unfortunately, none of these events will be held with fans in attendance. Most agree that it will be months before any of these events can take place with crowds in the stands. Some of the fights taking place next month have already been announced.
The sport of boxing is starting to get back on track. Some major title fights are now likely to take place sometime this summer. We might not be treated to the blockbuster trilogy fight between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez, though.
Here’s what we know about this situation.
We May Not See the Golovkin vs. Canelo Trilogy Fight This Summer
Gennady Golovkin is one of the most popular boxers on the planet. He’s 40-1 as a professional with the vast majority of his wins coming via KO. Even at 38 years old, many consider “GGG” to be a top pound-for-pound boxer.
The only loss on Golovkin’s record came against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Golovkin and Canelo have already fought twice and both bouts have been incredibly competitive. Fans have continued to call for a third fight between these two men.
This seemed highly likely to take place sometime this year. Both men have proven themselves to be at the top of the pack at middleweight. Unfortunately, it’s beginning to look like the Golovkin vs. Canelo trilogy fight may be put on hold.
A new report by Boxing News 24 claims Golovkin is more interested in fighting Kamil Szeremeta. Chris Mannix, a boxing analyst with Sports Illustrated, confirmed this news on his Twitter account. You can check the Tweet out below.
Golovkin has publicly expressed a preference to face Kamil Szeremeta, who he was scheduled to fight pre-pandemic. Alvarez has long expressed a desire to keep his May/September dates, when possible.

This is what everyone was afraid of. Both Canelo and GGG see the risk in fighting one another. Unless a significant amount of money is being offered, it seems unlikely that this bout will come together.
This may simply be posturing, though. Gennady Golovkin may be proposing taking on Kamil Szeremeta next just to gain more leverage in negotiations. Hope is that we’re able to see this third fight before the end of 2020.
