Hooker vs. Gaethje is the Perfect Fight to Make at Lightweight

Dan Hooker UFC And Justin Gaethje

  • Dan Hooker and Justin Gaethje are both coming off tough losses in their most recent bouts.
  • Both are in the top-5 of the UFC’s lightweight division.
  • Many fans are now calling for Hooker vs. Gaethje to take place early next year.

The UFC’s lightweight division is better now than ever before in history. Each man in the top-10 has the skills to become champion and with Khabib Nurmagomedov now sitting on the sidelines, it’s anyone’s guess who will be next in line for the title. Many are now calling for Hooker vs. Gaethje to take place sometime in early 2021.

It’s not hard to see why. These two men are widely considered to be the most exciting fighters in the UFC. The winner would have a real argument for a title shot. Today, we’ll talk about what could lead to this happening.

Let’s get into it!

Khabib Nurmagomedov Hints at New Meeting With Dana White

There’s a good chance that you’ve heard Khabib Nurmagomedov’s name in the UFC recently. The undefeated lightweight defended his title against Justin Gaethje last month. Immediately afterward, he told the public he was retiring from the sport of MMA.

This was extremely surprising news for fans to hear. Khabib is still just 32 years old and seems to be in his fighting prime. Unfortunately, he lost his father this year and seemed ready to finally move on to a different chapter in his life.

News then broke that the UFC was not stripping Khabib of his belt. This led many to speculate that he wasn’t retiring. The fact that he is staying inside of USADA’s drug testing programs makes this seem even more unlikely.

This week, Khabib went to Instagram with a message of “See you soon @danawhite.” It seems that Khabib and the UFC President will be meeting to discuss the future soon. This led to a new wave of speculation that “The Eagle” will be fighting again sometime next year.

No one really knows what’s going on. There are many fighters at 155 pounds that are pushing hard for a shot at the title. Several of the top lighters already had big fights lined up over the next few months.

It now seems that another huge lightweight matchup is being targeted to take place sometime next year.

Expect to See Hooker vs. Gaethje Early Next Year

The UFC has always been a talent-stacked weight division. Many believe that the division is more stacked than ever before in history. Over the next few months, fans will be treated to McGregor vs. Poirier, and Ferguson vs. Oliveira.

Some are now calling for Hooker vs. Gaethje to take place early next year, too. Dan Hooker is coming off a loss in a “fight of the year” contender against Dustin Poirier this summer. Gaethje most recently lost to the aforementioned Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Dan Hooker is now ranked 5th in the division. He spoke with the media recently and claims to be pushing for a fight against Justin Gaethje.

“Hands down, I want the (Justin) Gaethje fight,” Hooker said. “Just to me, as a fan of the sport, watching it from the outside, having Chandler turn down the (Tony) Ferguson opportunity in December kind of takes away a lot of that gung-ho mystique off him. He was coming into the UFC from another organization saying, ‘I’ll fight anyone, I’m ready to go, I’m ready to step in for the title.’ He stands on the scale and essentially makes weight and that rules him out of a fight against Tony Ferguson which, you beat Tony Ferguson, you pretty much position yourself as that next guy in line for a title shot.”

That’s exciting news to hear. Dan Hooker is a dangerous test for anyone. He desperately wants to bounce back from his most recent loss. A victory over Justin Gaethje would line him up for either a title shot or a number-one contender’s matchup.

The UFC has yet to make any formal announcements on this fight. That could change in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned for more updates on this situation!

What is Happening With Michael Chandler Right Now?

For more than a decade, Michael Chandler was thought to be one of the best fighters outside of the UFC. He had a long, successful run over in Bellator MMA. In September, news broke that Chandler had finally signed a contract with the UFC.

Michael was booked as a back-up in case either Khabib or Justin Gaethje fell out of their contest in October. That didn’t end up happening, and he hasn’t been given an official opponent since. Fans are busy trying to guess who he will be matched up against next.

One name that is coming up is Islam Makachev. Hardcore fans know Makachev as one of the main training partners of Khabib Nurmagomedov. He is 7-1 in the UFC and is currently riding a six-fight win streak.

Another possibility is Rafael Dos Anjos. RDA is coming off an incredible win over Paul Felder earlier this month. He didn’t take too much damage during that bout and may be willing to return sometime in the near future against Michael Chandler.

It will be interesting to see who the UFC ends up booking for this fight. Any man could find themselves in a title fight with an impressive enough performance.
