Hornets Defeat Nets NBA And Charlotte Hornets Logo

  • The Charlotte Hornets are off to their best start in franchise history with three straight wins.
  • Charlotte defeated the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday as +350 and +9.5 point betting underdogs.
  • The Hornets are +280 underdogs to make the playoffs this season.

The Charlotte Hornets are off to their first 3-0 start in franchise history.

Visiting the Barclays Center on Sunday, the Hornets stung the Brooklyn Nets and produced a huge 111-95 upset win on the road. Charlotte entered the game as a +350 Moneyline and +9.5 spread line underdogs against the consensus NBA title favorites and walked away with their first win in Brooklyn since 12/11/19.

Miles Bridges Leads the Way

Miles Bridges led the way for the Hornets, scoring 32 points on 9-16 shooting, including 3-5 from behind the three-point arc while also grabbing nine rebounds and 2 steals. Bridges also had 30 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals in their previous game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Bridges is averaging 25 points and 8 rebounds per game this season.

2021 Rookie of the Year LaMelo Ball had another great game with 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists while playing just 26 minutes. Ball is averaging 22 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game this season with shooting splits of .500/.510/1.00 after three games. He sat out the entire fourth quarter as it was veteran point guard Ish Smith who played the entire fourth quarter.

Smith finished with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists while helping Charlotte pull away from the Nets with a 32-17 4th quarter. After the game, Hornets head coach Borrego was asked why he sat LaMelo on the bench during the entire fourth quarter of the game and Borrego revealed that Ball told him to “ride out” Ish Smith because the team was playing so well with him during that stretch.

Hornets 3-0 For the First Time in Franchise History

With the win, the Hornets are 3-0 SU and ATS for the first time in franchise history despite not getting a lot of love from the best NBA sportsbooks. The Hornets only have the third-best odds to win the Southeast Division at +1200, 9th best odds to win the Eastern Conference at +3300, and are +6600 longshots to win the 2022 NBA title. Charlotte is also currently just a +280 betting underdog to make the playoffs and is a -130 favorite to go under 38.5 wins this season.

Charlotte finished 10th in the Eastern Conference and 4th in the Southeast Division last season with a record of 33-49. The Hornets made it to the Play-In Tournament but were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers. They have missed the playoffs in five consecutive seasons and have not won a playoff series since the 2002 Playoffs.

However, with their young stars LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges starting the season strong and Gordon Hayward hopefully healthy the entire year, the Hornets look to make a buzz this year. Charlotte has also added the likes of Ish Smith and Kelly Oubre Jr. to join the likes of Terry Rozier, PJ Washington, and Mason Plumlee who give the team veteran presence. If the Hornets can continue to play well around Ball and Bridges, they could make a buzz this season and surprise the sportsbooks.
