Fury Hunter Boxing Background

  • Hughie Fury has opened as the -152 betting favorite against Michael Hunter in their July 2 bout.
  • Fury and Hunter will be fighting for a chance to challenge the winner of the WBA world title fight between champion Trevor Bryan and challenger Daniel Dubois.
  • At +110, Hunter will be the betting underdog for only the third time in his professional boxing career.

Bookmakers are slightly favoring Hughie Fury to beat Michael Hunter when they meet in a WBA world title eliminator next month.

According to the best boxing betting sites, the first cousin of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury is the slight -152 betting favorite to beat Hunter who came back at +110 odds when the betting lines for their July 2nd bout opened yesterday.

The WBA has ordered that the winner of the Fury vs Hunter bout will go on to challenge the victor of the June 11 WBA world heavyweight fight between champion Trevor Bryan and British challenger Daniel Dubois.

Hammer Retires With a Bicep Injury

Fury stayed on course for a second world title shot when he defeated Christian Hammer after the latter retired in his corner in the 5th round of their October 16, 2021 bout with a bicep injury. The win was Fury’s third straight since losing to Alexander Povetkin in August 2019 when they fought for the WBA international heavyweight championship in London.

The 27-year-old Fury was the first boxer to win the super-heavyweight gold medal at the Boxing World Youth Championships, doing so in 2012. At the age of 23, he challenged for the WBO heavyweight title in 2017 but lost on points to then-champion Joseph Parker. Fury won the British heavyweight title in his next bout. Overall, Fury has a record of 26-13 with 15 knockouts.

The Manchester native has been the betting underdog only three times in his professional boxing career. Those happened during his losses to Parker, Povetkin, and Kubrat Pulev. As a betting favorite, this marks Fury’s longest odds ever, overtaking the -500 opening odds he had when he defeated Mariusz Wach via unanimous decision in December 2020.

Hunter Salvages Draw Against Jerry Forrest

Meanwhile, Hunter salvaged a split draw against Jerry Forrest last December 2, 2021, and avoided a massive upset. Forrest entered the bout as a massive +1200 betting underdog and looked like he did enough to pull off one of the biggest betting upsets of last year. Meanwhile, it was the second split draw in Hunter’s last four bouts after his 2019 bout against Alexander Povetkin also ended in a split draw.

The 33-year-old from Van Nuys, California was a former super heavyweight amateur National Champion in 2007 and 2009. Hunter qualified for the 2012 Olympics but was beaten by current world champion Artur Beterbiev in the opening round. He won his first 12 professional bouts before suffering his first loss to current heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk when he challenged for the WBO cruiserweight title. Overall, Hunter has a record of 20-1 with 14 knockouts and two draws.

This marks only the third time in Hunter’s career that he has opened with the plus money sign written next to his name. The first one was when he opened at +700 against Usyk. Hunter was also the +175 betting underdog when he hit the betting boards at +175 against Martin Bakole in 2018. He won that fight via 10th-round TKO. Hunter closed as a heavy -2500 to beat Forrest the last time out.
