Ime Udoka Favored to Win 2023 NBA Coach of the Year Award

NBA Coach Of The Year What Are The Odds

  • Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka has opened as the +550 odds-on favorite to win the 2023 NBA Coach of the Year award.
  • Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd is the second favorite at +750 odds.
  • Last season’s winner, Phoenix Suns HC Monty Williams, has opened at +1200 odds.

After finishing 4th in the 2022 NBA Coach of the Year voting, Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka has opened as the odds-on favorite to win the 2023 NBA Coach of the Year award.

Udoka steered the Celtics to the 2022 NBA Finals during his first season as head coach. Although Boston lost to the Golden State Warriors in the series, big things are expected from Boston this season, especially after making a significant splash in the free agency period.

Celtics 2023 Title Favorites

The Celtics opened with the second-best odds to win the 2023 NBA championship at +650 odds via Bovada with only the Warriors ahead of them at +500. But after acquiring Malcolm Brogdon in a trade with the Indiana Pacers without giving up significant assets, the Celtics moved to the top of the latest NBA title boards at +550 odds with the Phoenix Suns at +600 and the Warriors listed at +650.

Udoka transformed the Celtics from a sub.500 team at the start of 2022 to the Eastern Conference’s second seed when the regular season was over. Boston swept the preseason favorites, Brooklyn, next in the opening round of the 2022 playoffs before ousting the 2021 NBA champions Milwaukee Bucks in round two and outdueling the East no. 1 seed Miami Heat in the East Finals.

The Celtics lost to the Warriors 4-2 in the 2022 NBA Finals as they failed to get consistent support for their trio of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Marcus Smart. However, with Brogdon joining the team next season, big things are expected from Boston.

Brogdon averaged 19.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game last season and if Udoka can fuse him with his Big Three, the Celtics are going to be a problem for the rest of the NBA next season. Boston is also expected to sign veteran big man Danilo Gallinari after he was waved by the San Antonio Spurs during the first week of free agency.

Kidd for Coach of the Year

Jason Kidd opens with the second-best odds to win the 2023 NBA Coach of the Year at +750. Like Udoka, Kidd’s team was eliminated in the 2022 NBA Playoffs by the Golden State Warriors. The Mavericks went all the way to the 2022 Western Conference Finals for the first time since their 2011 championship season.

Kidd also led the Mavericks to a regular-season record that was 20 games above the .500 mark, the first time that the Mavs had done that since 2011. He also made Dallas the second-best defensive team in the NBA as far as points allowed were concerned at +104.9 PPG allowed last season. The Mavs entered their 42nd season last year having never finished better than 4th in that statistical department. Kidd however, will have to fill the void left by Jalen Brunson who signed with the New York Knicks in free agency.

Meanwhile, Memphis Grizzlies HC Taylor Jenkins is third at +1000 odds on the BetOnline betting boards after leading his team to the second seed in the Western Conference. Like Udoka and Kidd, Jenkins’ team was eliminated by the Dubs in the playoffs. But with Ja Morant expected to get even better next season, Memphis is high on the oddsmakers’ list.

2022 NBA Coach of the Year winner Monty Williams is fourth with his +1200 odds. Williams led the Suns to the best record in the NBA one season after taking them to the 2021 NBA Finals. L.A. Clippers’ bench tactician Tyronn Lue is next at +1400 as his team is expected to get Kawhi Leonard back while also adding John Wall. Denver’s Mike Malone and Toronto’s Nick Nurse are both listed at +1600.
