JC Martinez Favored to Beat Sunny Edwards in Flyweight Title Unification

Martinez Vs Edwards Boxing

  • Julio Cesar Martinez has opened as the -175 betting favorite against Sunny Edwards in their flyweight title unification bout.
  • Meanwhile, Edwards hit the betting boards as the +145 betting underdog.
  • Martinez and Edwards are reportedly close to booking an October 22 title unification fight.

With reports that the flyweight world title unification between WBC champion Julio Cesar Martinez and IBF champion Sunny Edwards is on the verge of being made for October 22nd, the top boxing sportsbooks have opened the betting lines for that bout.

According to the oddsmakers, Martinez is the -175 betting favorite to walk away with the two belts. Meanwhile, Edwards opened as the +145 underdog to become a two-belt champion:

McWilliams Arroyo, who was supposed to fight Martinez in a rematch next, has reportedly agreed to step aside to make the unification bout happen. Arroyo is expected to face Joselito Velasquez in the Martinez vs Edwards undercard and is presumed to get the first crack at the unified champion.

Roman Gonzalez Dominates Julio Cesar Martinez

Martinez will be looking to rebound from a loss to Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez last March 5th in a bout that Martinez took on less than six weeks’ notice after Chocolatio’s original opponent, Juan Francisco Estrada, withdrew after testing positive for COVID-19. Gonzalez dominated Martinez in the 12-round bout but it was fought at junior bantamweight.

Despite the loss, Martinez remains the WBC flyweight champion. The 27-year-old from Mexico City knocked out Cristofer Rosales in December 2019 to win the belt. Since then, he has successfully defended it four times, including in a no-contest against McWilliams Arroyo last November. Overall, Martinez has a record of 18-2 with 14 knockouts.

The Mexican has never been a betting underdog at flyweight and the only time he’s opened and closed with the plus money sign written next to his name was when he fought Chocolatito. In that bout, Martinez opened at +162 and closed at +115 odds. However, his current odds against Edwards are the longest as a betting favorite.

Sunny Edwards Retains IBF Flyweight Title

Meanwhile, Sunny Edwards entertained in retaining his IBF flyweight title with a unanimous decision win over Pakistan’s Muhammad Waseem at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre in Abu Dhabi last March 19th. The win was Edwards’ second successful defense of his title after he defeated Filipino challenger Jayson Mama last December, also in Dubai.

The 26-year-old from Sutton in London, England was a multiple- champion at the regional level, having won the WBO European super-flyweight title, IBF international super-flyweight title, and British super-flyweight title. Edwards dethroned South Africa’s Moruti Mthalane in 201 to become world champion.

Overall, Edwards has a record of 18-0 with four knockouts. This will mark only the second time in his career that Edwards has opened with the plus money sign written next to his name. He hit the betting boards at +125 against Mthalane and closed as the +130 bottom dog in that bout.
