Murphy Beats Calderwood
— MMA Junkie (@MMAjunkie) June 13, 2021
Calderwood is coming off a narrow and tough split decision loss to Lauren Murphy in a fight that would’ve given her her first UFC title shot. Instead, it was Murphy who went on to face ( and lose to ) Valentina Shevchenko for the UFC women’s flyweight title at UFC 266 two months ago.
The loss was Calderwood’s third in her last five bouts and her fifth in her last 10 bouts. Calderwood has alternated with a win and loss in her last six bouts and is just 7-6 overall in 13 UFC appearances. Calderwood joined the promotion in 2014 with an unbeaten 8-0 record which included a 4-0 run at Invicta FC. However, she has not found enough consistency in the UFC to earn her a crack at gold.
Interestingly, Calderwood’s last three losses came in fights where she was the favorite. “Jojo” was a -130 odds on favorite to beat Murphy and was also a -210 favorite when she was submitted by Jennifer Maia last year and a -115 in her loss to Katlyn Chookagian. However, she was also the underdog when she beat Andee Lee (+210) and Ariane Lipski (+215).
Santos Defeat Modafferi
#UFC266 results: Taila Santos def. Roxanne Modafferi via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
— MMA Junkie (@MMAjunkie) September 26, 2021
Santos meanwhile is coming off a unanimous decision win over Roxanne Modafferi at UFC 266. The victory was the third straight for the 28-year old Brazilian since losing to Mara Romero Borella in 2019. After the win, Santos asked the UFC to book her against a top-rated contender, and the promotion obliged by pitting her against the no. 6 ranked flyweight in Calderwood.
A product of the Contender Series Brazil 2 show, Santos is a former Aspera FC bantamweight champion. She won her first 15 bouts including 11 by stoppage before appearing in the Contender Series. Unfortunately for her, she suffered a split decision win to Borella in the UFC debut but has since been on a tear and has moved up to 9th in the latest UFC flyweight rankings.
This marks the fifth time in six UFC bouts where Santos has opened as the betting favorite in her fight. The only time she saw the plus money sign next to her name was when she was listed at +180 against Molly McCann. She won that fight on points. Santos meanwhile was a sizeable -225 favorite when she dropped a decision to Borella.
